Accident Friday- traffic awareness

August 25th, 2018

Dear parents and guardians,

This Friday after student dismissal I was alerted by a parent that a young person had been hit by a vehicle in the crosswalk of East 32nd Avenue, directly across Muldoon from our parking lot. When I arrived on the scene I found the victim conscious with several bystanders assisting her, and determined immediately that she was not one of our students. Mr. Kluever, Mr. Beirer and I provided support and stayed with her until APD arrived and took over the scene. She was stable and alert, if in pain and afraid, when we left her in their care.

This brings to the forefront that our students frequently cross Muldoon and side streets walking to and from school. With 150 students, traffic has increased in our lot and we are responding by adding safety cones, more staff presence, and directing traffic one way around the loop and out the back exit (see attached map).

Please stress and emphasize safety with your children when walking, crossing streets and intersections, and in parking lots where most accidents happen. The thought of one of our students getting hit by a vehicle or otherwise injured worries me deeply, as student safety is our highest priority and greatest responsibility. Let's talk with our children and work to keep everyone safe and aware.

If you have questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact me.

Call, email or stop by between 7:30am and 3:00pm with any questions. Here is an overview of important information for the start of the year.

Registration:

Please remember that even if your student is returning to ASD you MUST register them for the school year.  Registration online is currently open for returning students from 7/9 - 8/24. Please do this as soon as possible so that we can make sure your student is scheduled. If your student is new to ASD, Ms. Sandy will be contacting you regarding enrollment.
Important upcoming dates and events:
  • Lottery closes this Thursday, July 26th at 5 PM. Apply at https://lotapp.asdk12.org/apply/

Ready for 2018-19

June 15th, 2018

Thank you STrEaM staff, students, families and supporters for an excellent year! We completed our second year successfully and are ready for great things ahead. Already, we project at least 150 students enrolling this fall.  We are adding additional classrooms and staff to accommodate our growth, and will keep our class sizes small.

Already we've hired two new teachers! Howard Mozen comes to us from Begich as a resource and reading intervention teacher, and Emily Smith comes from Clark to teach Language Arts. We are very excited about these high-quality additions to our staff!

Mr. Mokelke and Mrs. Sandy are back in the office on July 23rd. Until then email either of us, mokelke_adam@asdk12.org or thompson_sandra@asdk12.org
We will be checking email regularly.

The lottery closes July 26th at 5 PM. Apply at https://lotapp.asdk12.org/apply/

Teachers return August 13th, starting with a 3 day workshop with the Buck Institute on Project-Based Learning. The first day of school is August 20!

We plan some modifications to the master schedule for 18-19. Wednesday will remain as Early Release day. However, on Monday and Friday students will have all core classes, periods 1-7. Tuesday and Thursday will again be "block" days. Periods 1-3 and Elective on Tuesday, Periods 4-6 and Advisory on Thursday. See the full schedule here: 18-19 SCHEDULE

This summer make sure to get out and play. Explore, adventure, climb, bike, fish, build, plant, grow.
When it is raining, get out a good book and read. Enjoy time with friends and family. School starts again soon enough!

Thank you all!
Adam Mokelke
