Rapids Report for 2-28-22

The Rapids Report

February 28th, 2022

Dear STrEaM Families,

We’ve reached the last week of quarter 3! Remember there is no school Friday, or next week. Spring break! We return on Monday March 14th for the 4th quarter.

Last week we sent an update on the district’s move to optional parent-choice masking. ASD encourages students and staff to continue wearing masks, and there are conditions that will require masking, such as presenting respiratory symptoms, returning from COVID isolation, awaiting parent pick-up due to COVID symptoms, or riding buses.

Follow this link to the full parent letter from STrEaM on optional masking.

Please take the family School Climate and Connectedness Survey! This is valuable feedback and helps us to recognize strengths, identify goal areas, and improve our program.

We're proud of and thankful for our positive school culture. During school tours and at the ASD charter fair, our student leaders spoke about the closeness, support, high engagement, and frequent outdoor activities at STrEaM. They also spoke about the low levels of bullying and other serious misbehavior at our school. To hear the perspective of students, shared with prospective students and families, was so positive and encouraging.

In closing, a quote from Rudyard Kipling:

“For the strength of the Wolf is the Pack, and the strength of the Pack is the Wolf.”

We are strong together.

Move to Optional Masking

 Transition to Informed Masking

February 24th, 2022

Updated February 28th

Dear STrEaM Friends and Families,

Beginning Monday, February 28th all ASD schools will transition to parent informed, optional mask wearing for students. Masks will be optional for staff and visitors. Notice that masks are still required under certain conditions, such as presenting respiratory symptoms, returning from COVID isolation, awaiting parent pick-up due to COVID symptoms, or riding busses. Please continue to keep your child home and get them tested if they are sick or display symptoms. Follow this LINK to ASD's full updated policy.

As we transition to optional masking, our school will continue to model dignity and respect. I ask that all of us, staff, students and families, respect the choice each family and individual makes regarding mask wearing. I’ve heard parental concerns about students feeling pressure from peers on their masking choice, so I ask that as you discuss your family choice on masking, you also emphasize respecting the choice and decision of others.

On behalf of our staff, I want to make clear that we will not police the choices of families regarding optional masking. To be specific, we cannot track which families are asking their children to wear masks or enforce that decision: this is between you and your child.

These past two years have been difficult, some of the most challenging times any of us have been through, both in education and in the world in general. Through it all, our school community has not only stayed the course, we’ve grown stronger. I believe this is because we’ve been open in our communication, listened to feedback, and maintained dignity and respect. I know we will handle this latest policy change as we have each new development: with grace and resilience.

Thank you for your continued support, patience, and understanding. Please don’t hesitate to call me if you have questions or would like to discuss this further.

STEM at STrEaM:

This Saturday our Robotics team participated in the First Lego League State competition! We’re proud of our students and the team which represented us at this level for the first time. Teams from all over Alaska competed in three main categories: the robotic game, innovation project and core values. Social-Emotional Learning Topic of the Week

The Social-Emotional Learning topic this week is accountability. Taking responsibility for our words, actions, and impact on others is powerful, and can be restorative and cathartic. When we ask students to reflect and restore after an incident, there is an emphasis on taking accountability for their actions, regardless of the reasons or actions of others. Accountability is a step in learning to self-regulate and build positive relationships.

Academic Policy Committee

APC board meeting is this Wednesday, February 9th at 5:30 PM on Zoom and Youtube. Contact us to be on the agenda for public comment. The Facilities Committee will present the criteria for a future STrEaM facility for APC review and comment.
