Rapids Report 12-15-17

The RAPIDS Report

News from Anchorage STrEaM Academy
DECEMBER 15, 2017

Dear STrEaM friends and families,

We are busy wrapping up the first semester, with our big Student Showcase event tonight (12/15) from 4 to 6 PM. Next Thursday 12/21 is the last day of school for this semester, and we will be doing a sled building engineering challenge and holiday celebrations in advisory.

School Culture:  Our message this week has been Finish Strong! We are working hard to maintain structure, expectations and academic engagement up to the last day of school.
We focus on restorative practices over punitive consequences at ASA. This promotes reflection, mindfulness, empathy and other social-emotional skills, and focuses on healing and understanding rather than punishing. We strongly believe this approach builds positive school culture, is empowering and effective.

Planning: We return to school Monday January 8th, and our monthly APC meeting will be that evening. Other important items for January include Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday (no school) Monday January 15th, the school lottery, Geography Bee January 24th.

Communication: Grades will be complete and submitted by 4 PM on Friday, December 22nd.
Beginning January 8th, parents will be able to order a hot lunch online from “Wooden Spoon.” Meals will be delivered to the school each day before lunch.  Learn more at https://woodenspoonsalaska.schoollunchchoice.com/

After school pickup: We are obligated to supervise students until they are picked up. Students must be picked up by 3:30. After 3:45, any students still at school will wait in the principal’s office and parents will need to come in and sign them out in person.

Focus on Safety: Wednesday we completed our latest evacuation drill. Expanding on the traditional fire drill, we blocked two exits with a simulated fire and simulated dangerous intruder (me!). Students took the nearest safe exit to our primary rally point (east parking lot). The ALICE framework empowers staff and students to include common sense thinking, like avoiding dangerous areas and finding safe egress. Mrs. Staker is our staff ALICE trainer and safety coordinator: please help me thank her for coordinating our drills and emergency plans.

Enjoy the break and the holidays. I hope we can all find time to get outdoors!
