Wednesday Breaks at STrEaM

Please be sure your child packs their snack of choice. Friends of STrEaM and our donors for the Pantry Program have been seeing a huge increase in the number of students requesting snacks during Wednesday morning breaks.

Lunch at STrEaM from our Pantry Program

Please be sure your child packs a cold lunch. This week we need CHIPS or GOLDFISH. We do not have a lunch program or lunchroom. Lunch is generally outdoors unless the weather is prohibitive. 45% of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes and we hope to help them with free lunches when necessary. We have been serving between 8 and 17 lunches per day this month. Donations of Bread, Peanut Butter, Cheese & Turkey lunch meat are always welcome. Call 742-9000 for more information.

Rapids Report for 1-23-23

 The Rapids Report

January 23rd, 2023

Dear STrEaM Families,

We’re into the third week of quarter 3 and things are going great at STrEaM! Classes are getting outside every day, embracing the snow and winter in Alaska. Ski season is off to a great start, with almost 50 skiers and three coaches.

Growth and Learning Gaps in Math

The pandemic and online learning disrupted education in ways we are still discovering. We are very proud of how STrEaM navigated these challenges, yet we recognize learning deficits exist. Reading and math are the foundation of all learning; thus, we encourage parents to focus on these areas first.

Many students have developed some deficits, gaps or holes in their learning in math specifically. iReady is a great tool to address gaps in math and build a solid foundation. Students take the iReady diagnostic test, which identifies their learning strengths and gaps, then designs instruction at their level to meet their needs. We recommend students work on their individual myplan on iReady at home to continue building their foundation in math. Students in Algebra and Geometry can work on ALEKS.
