Communicating with teens: Tip of the week!

Linda Cliatt-Wayman gave an excellent Ted talk once about going in and fixing a broken school. After listing all the problems with behaviors and academic failures, she asked this question: so what, now what? Many of us find ourselves looking at our teens and feeling disconnected, frustrated, and even hopeless. There are a lot of obstacles we can name. But so what? NOW what? What tools do we have at our disposal to make sure we are giving our kids their best chance at developing healthy communication habits, advocating for themselves, and handling their emotions in productive ways?

Tip 1: Incorporate both quality and quantity time! (purposeful and agenda-free togetherness)

Tip 2: It is never too late or too early to start modeling good communication skills. How?

Tip 3: Talking less and listening without judgment How?

Oh boy! This is a hard one. It is really difficult to listen to our kids without stepping in with 1. Advice or 2. Feelings/Judgement. This can shut down a conversation as kids are really seeking to voice their concerns without being drowned out by our opinions, judgements, feelings, or advice. Here are a few things to try:

  • Asking questions like “what do you think you will do?”

  • Summarizing things like, “you’re feeling angry because…”

  • Affirming like, “that sounds really hard.”

Families with an iPhone

Authorities are warning iPhone users of one of the features from the newest iPhone update.

The feature called “NameDrop” is enabled by default with the new update. Anyone with this feature can place their phone next to your iPhone or your child’s iPhone and easily exchange contact information.

To disable this feature, police said to go into your iPhone settings, click general, then airdrop and shut off “bringing devices together.”

According to WFIE, officials with Apple said the contacts won’t be shared unless you choose to share your contact card and receive the other person’s.

NameDrop will also cancel if the two iOS devices are moved away from each other or the iPhone is locked before the transfer completes.

Health Updates

If your child has not had a comprehensive eye examination, the best time is now! Studies show that 86% of students start the school year without ever having had an eye examination. This statistic is shocking considering how important vision is in the classroom! The facts below may help put the importance of these examinations into perspective:

80% of learning comes through your child’s eyes. One in four students has a visual impairment. If a child has gone through development without seeing clearly, then the likelihood of that child actually explaining to a parent or teacher that the world is “blurry” or “double” is very low. The child may not know that he or she is seeing poorly.

School vision screenings are a great way to flag children with sight-threatening conditions, but a screening is not sensitive enough to prompt referral for all learning related visual conditions. If your child has not had an eye examination, schedule an appointment with an optometrist. The earlier a vision problem is detected and treated, the more likely treatment will be successful. Your child may be more enthusiastic in the classroom without visual complications.

Please feel free to email or call me with any questions. zimpelman_bethany@asdk12.org

Wishing you well
