We are hosting school tours on Tuesdays at 10 am throughout the month of February and our student ambassador leaders are traveling to our feeder elementary schools to present to 5th graders.  If you know someone who is interested in sending their kids to STrEaM next year, please pass on the school tour invite or have them contact us directly for more information.

6th Grade TREK to Downtown Anchorage

6th Grade parents: please complete the field trip permission form (LINKED HERE) for our upcoming 6th grade Downtown Memorial Tour/TREK on Wed, March 8!  This is happening on a “full Wednesday.”  School is 8:00-3:00 that day.  During the TREK, students will investigate connections to Social Studies and Language Arts projects with the questions: What impact do monuments have on the way we think about history?  What impact do these monuments have on the physical landscape?

Also, WE NEED PARENT CHAPERONES! Please email smith_emily@asdk12.org if you are interested/available.  Thank you so much! :)

STrEaM Celebrations!

Ms. Wesley’s 8th Grade Social Studies students win First Place!!

From October to December 2022, 8th graders at STrEaM Academy studied Native American and Alaska Native history and culture in both Social Studies and English Language Arts. Students studied various tribes from the lower 48 before learning about the Indian Removal Act, the Dawes Act and other legislation that contributed to the creation of the reservation system. Students created maps and diagrams to study geography and movement of Indigenous peoples across North America. Students then studied Alaska history and the passage of the Alaska Native Settlement Claims Act of 1971. In Language Arts, students read a contemporary young adult novel called, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” to pair with Social Studies content. Our 8th graders submitted an entry into AEA’s National Indigenous People’s Month Heritage Month project and won first place! With the prize money, students are planning a cultural banquet toward the end of the year.

Health Spotlight: Nurse Bethany

The American Dental Association celebrates February as National Children’s Dental Health Month. This observance reinforces the importance of oral health in children as well as helping parents with tips to keep their child’s smile on track!

Parents, Did You Know? Early childhood tooth decay has become the most common chronic childhood disease, impacting more children than asthma. Kids who suffer from poor oral health are three times more likely to miss school as a result of dental pain. If you need a list of great local pediatric dentist, please reach out.

Happy Brushing

STrEaM Lunch Program:

Wednesday Break Snacks

Lunch at STrEaM supported by our Pantry Program & Friends of Stream

Please be sure your child packs a cold lunch. This week we need SHELF STABLE FRUIT. 45% of our students (76 students) come from economically disadvantaged homes and we hope to help them with free lunches when necessary. We served an average of 20 lunches each day last week. To put that in perspective, that is 8 loaves of bread, 48 oz of peanut butter and 4 pounds of lunch meat every week. Donations of Bread, Peanut Butter, Cheese & Turkey lunch meat are always welcome.

Snow day make-up & Emergency Closures

“Emergency” Project Packets went home to ALL students! Please ensure you have this manilla envelope. Thes packets contain grade-level projects designed specifically for snow days and emergency closures.

In case of an emergency school closure, students will open these packets and do the Projects enclosed. These projects do not require technology. However, instructions will also be posted in Canvas, and teachers will host zoom sessions to offer support.

STrEaM is making up missed days due to emergency closure by extending three Wednesdays (on short weeks) to full days in addition to other district calendar adjustments (2/24 is now a school day).

The following Wednesdays will be full school days (no early release):

Wednesday 2/22 (No school Monday 2/20 Presidents’ Day)

Health Spotlight: Nurse Bethany

Hearts can be seen everywhere this month. But it isn’t the sweet candies that make our heart healthy – explore how you can keep your kids and family heart-healthy this February.

While we focus on heart health during February, keeping your heart healthy is really an everyday job. Having a healthy heart means blood is moving to all our organs and that we are doing our best to prevent heart disease and strokes. The important task of heart health ensures that both our own bodies and those of our children, are able to enjoy life to the fullest at every age.

The American Heart Association has developed a list to help parents and youth understand what it means to keep your heart healthy.

1. Avoid smoking and using tobacco products. Using any type of tobacco products affect all organs and can lead to heart disease and cancer.

2. Be physically active every day. Get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity every day. This might include bike riding, running, playing sports, dancing or other activities you enjoy.

3. Eat a heart-healthy diet. Eating fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy products, whole grain foods and lean proteins. Avoid drinks with added sugar and saturated fat.

From my heart to yours - wishing you well

STrEaM at the Arctic Winter Games

Nico Graziano, 7th grader at STrEaM Academy, represented Team Alaska in the 2023 Arctic Winter Games held in Wood Buffalo, Alberta Canada. He competed in the U14 age category against 12–14 year-old athletes from eight different contingents representing the arctic nations. As one of the youngest skiers in the age bracket he had amazing results. He placed 6th in the 3.75 km freestyle ski, 7th in the 3.75 km classic ski (after getting tangled with another skier), and 6th in the sprint classic. The highlight of the games came on the final day in a make-up race, initially canceled due to temps reaching -25 degrees Fahrenheit. Nico joined two of his teammates in a freestyle relay event, where Team Alaska easily out skied the competition to take home the gold ulu. Nico is excited to be home and looks forward to finishing this year’s middle school race season with his STrEaM teammates.
