Please remind students to dress warm and be prepared!

This week is a short week, with no school on Thursday 11/25 and Friday 11/26 to celebrate Thanksgiving! December is already right around the corner. My favorite word in an Alaskan Native language is “Quyana.” Quyana is Yupik for “Thank You.” When you say it out loud, it is a beautiful word, conveying grace. I want to thank you all and wish you a great Thanksgiving holiday. Stay warm and stay safe.

Quyana!

Rapids Report 11-15-21

The Rapids Report

November 15th, 2021

Dear STrEaM Families,

Let it snow! Winter has definitely arrived. Parents, PLEASE ensure your children are coming to school dressed for the weather! This week, with temperatures expected to be very cold, we will have lunch indoors (with safety protocols including desk shields). We will continue going outdoors for 15 minutes during lunchtime.

Winter Gear: Outside Every Day!

We are an outdoor-focused program and we go outside every day (except for those RARE and few days it is deemed too cold or unsafe.)

Students are expected to dress appropriately for winter weather: bring coats, hats, gloves, boots, ready to walk the trails in Muldoon Park, play on 10 minute breaks, romp in the snow, or run around at lunch. Footwear such as sandals, slippers and crocs (all seen on Friday!) are not adequate or appropriate for the conditions.

Families in need of support with winter gear, please contact Mr. Mokelke or Mrs. Biondich and we will utilize our resources to support you.

Alaska Native & American Indian Heritage Month

November is Alaska Native American Indian Heritage Month. This is a time to celebrate the history, traditions, rich and diverse cultures of Native peoples. Heritage Month is a perfect time to learn about American Indian and Alaska Native tribes, cultures and traditions, the challenges Native people have faced from the past to the present, and the ways in which Indigenous peoples have overcome these obstacles.

Chromebook Phase-Out

60 of our (oldest) Chromebooks are being phased out. If your child has an “A” or "B" Chromebook (Dell, with a blue border) please have them see Mr. Boone to exchange their laptop and charger for a new one.

Lunch at STrEaM

We have outdoor lunch school-wide to mitigate the risk of spread of infectious disease with fresh air and space for distancing. When conditions are cold or inclement, each lunch room supervisor has the following options:

  • Take their group outdoors for 30 minutes

  • Eat lunch with desk shields in classrooms for 15 minutes, then go outdoors 15 minutes

  • Eat outdoors for the first 15 minutes, returning to the classroom for 15 minutes

  • Eat lunch indoors for 30 minutes (desk shields until all students finish eating)

If a student is in a lunchroom that is outside for the full 30 minutes, they can request to go to an indoor lunchroom and their lunch supervisor will radio to find open space.

Health & Safety

It is now dark in the morning when students are arriving. It is so important for walkers and bikers to wear reflective clothing and safety gear. Drivers, be cautious and watch for students on foot or wheels when you are picking up or dropping off.

Other Health and Safety notes:

  • We go outside every day, including PE, breaks and lunch:

    • Students must bring outdoor gear appropriate for the weather conditions

  • Keep ASD Symptom Free: Stay home & get tested if experiencing ANY symptoms

  • Masks required indoors, optional outside

Have an awesome and safe November! Although we lose light and the air gets colder, it is a beautiful time of year in Alaska. Remember, Thanksgiving is just around the corner.
