Accident Friday- traffic awareness

August 25th, 2018

Dear parents and guardians,

This Friday after student dismissal I was alerted by a parent that a young person had been hit by a vehicle in the crosswalk of East 32nd Avenue, directly across Muldoon from our parking lot. When I arrived on the scene I found the victim conscious with several bystanders assisting her, and determined immediately that she was not one of our students. Mr. Kluever, Mr. Beirer and I provided support and stayed with her until APD arrived and took over the scene. She was stable and alert, if in pain and afraid, when we left her in their care.

This brings to the forefront that our students frequently cross Muldoon and side streets walking to and from school. With 150 students, traffic has increased in our lot and we are responding by adding safety cones, more staff presence, and directing traffic one way around the loop and out the back exit (see attached map).

Please stress and emphasize safety with your children when walking, crossing streets and intersections, and in parking lots where most accidents happen. The thought of one of our students getting hit by a vehicle or otherwise injured worries me deeply, as student safety is our highest priority and greatest responsibility. Let's talk with our children and work to keep everyone safe and aware.

If you have questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact me.
