3-30 launch into digital learning!

March 30th, 2020

Dear parents and families,

As you navigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, we hope you are safe, healthy and finding ways to enjoy life while you “hunker down.” The STrEaM Team is here to support you, providing continued learning opportunities in supportive, creative and engaging ways. We want to be clear that we are not here to add stress to families, and we work to resolve problems with you along the way.

Over the past two weeks our teachers and staff have worked tirelessly to prepare digital learning. They’ve adjusted Google Classrooms, become experts in Zoom for online meetings, filmed lessons, found new resources and participated in countless workshops and trainings. We are ready for online learning to begin!

Digital Learning with STrEaM:

Officially, online classes begin tomorrow, Tuesday 3/31. Our primary delivery for online learning is through Google Classroom. All our staff already use this to supplement their classes, and all our students already have access and know how to navigate this platform: viewing information, doing and submitting assignments, collaborating with peers, and taking assessments. Note this is different from ASD comprehensive schools, which are using two new platforms: APEX and Canvas. STrEaM is NOT using those.
Most learning will not happen “live” or synchronous: students will log on to Google Classroom, read announcements, watch videos, complete assignments, etc. This is “asynchronous” or independent, on their own schedule.
Synchronous or “live” interactions: Teachers have “office hours” two days per week, where they will be on Zoom and available to students who need support and instruction. Advisors have scheduled a Zoom meeting once per week to check in with their advisories.
Office hours and teacher schedules will be posted on our website today. Teachers are all emailing parents to share their Google Classroom information and office hours schedule.

Online Etiquette:

Attached are some documents to provide guidance with online etiquette. Please review these, and let’s work to keep our online classrooms positive, supportive and appropriate.

Grades:

We will follow ASD’s direction that middle school students will not receive final grades for 4th quarter work. However, assessment and feedback is still an essential part of learning and will still happen. Teachers will track and give feedback on assignments, provide assessments of learning, and monitor student progress.

Parent support:

We understand you will have many questions and challenges as we embark on this learning journey together.
First, email the teacher with questions specific to a class or their Google Classroom, lessons, schedule or direction.
For general questions, email Mr. Mokelke and Mrs. Biondich. The school phone, 742-9000, is forwarded and we can answer/respond this way as well.
For links, resources, contact information and more, our school website is a great resource: https://www.asdk12.org/stream
Beginning this Thursday, we will host an open “Coffee with the Principal” Zoom session from 8 to 9 AM. Following this, we will do this on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is time for you to talk, ask questions, get support and information.

I know you will be inundated with information today, and this week. I apologize in advance for the emails and glut of communication. If it becomes overwhelming, step away and come back to it when you are ready. This week is a “soft start,” an opportunity to ease into this together. Reasonable goals this week may be for students to log on to Google Classroom, check in, and begin developing a schedule and routine.

Reach out if you need anything. We’re here to support you.

Sincerely,

Adam Mokelke, Principal

ZOOM – Student Online Classroom Etiquette
• This is a virtual classroom, therefore, appropriate classroom behavior is expected.
• Log into your class or meeting from a distraction-free, quiet environment.
• Please keep your audio on mute until you want to speak. This will help to limit background noise.
• Consider using a headset with an external mic for best hearing and speaking capabilities.
• Close unneeded applications on your computer to optimize the video quality.
• If you would like to speak or answer a question, use the “Raise Hand” feature. Then unmute yourself after you are called on by your teacher.
• When you are speaking, let others know that you are finished by saying something like, “That’s all,” or “I’m done,” or “Thank you,” so that everyone knows you have finished your comments.
• If you would like to use the chatbox, remember that it is public, and a record of the chat is kept and archived.
• Keep paper and a pen or pencil handy to take notes.
• Make sure your video is on (if you have camera capabilities) so your teacher and peers can see you.
• Be mindful of your background lighting. If you are sitting with your back to a window, you may be silhouetted by the light coming through. Your overhead light might also need to be adjusted for the best image quality.
• Please take care of your personal needs (appropriate dress, basic hygiene, eating, chewing gum, talking to others in your home, etc.) prior to entering a Zoom classroom.
• Please do not use profanity or inappropriate language.
• Remember to sign out or “leave the meeting” when the session is finished.

Best Practices for Parents to Support Online Learning
The transition to online learning may be challenging for some families. Parents will need to think differently about how to support their children, create structures and routines that allow their children to be successful, and how to monitor and support their children’s learning. The best practices provided below are intended to assist parents in helping their children find success in an online learning environment.
Establish routines and expectations
Parents need to establish routines and expectations from day one of online learning. Parents are encouraged to set regular hours for their student’s schoolwork including a normal bedtime and wake up time. It is important that parents set these expectations as soon as online learning begins.
Define the physical space for your student’s school work
Your student may have a regular place for doing homework under normal circumstances, but this space may or may not be suitable for an extended period of time. We encourage families to establish a space/location where their student will learn most of the time. This should be a public/family space, not in a child’s bedroom.
Begin and end each day with a check-in
Parents are encouraged to start and finish each day with a simple check-in. In the morning, ask what is your child learning today? What are their learning goals? How will they spend their time? What resources do they require? What support do they need? Older students may not want to have these check-ins with parents, but they should nevertheless. Parents should establish these check-ins as regular parts of each day.
Take an active role in helping your student process their learning
Human beings learn best when they have opportunities to process their learning with others. Beyond the check-ins recommended at the start and end of each day, parents should regularly circle back and engage with their children about what they’re learning.
Establish times for quiet and reflection
A huge challenge for families with multiple children will be how to manage all of their children’s needs, especially when those students vary in age. There may be times when siblings need to work in different rooms to avoid distractions. Parents may even experiment with noise-canceling headphones to block out distractions.
Encourage physical activity and/or exercise
Make sure your children remember to move and exercise. This is vitally important to their health, well being, and learning.
Monitor how much time your child is spending online
Please monitor your student’s social media use, especially during an extended school closure. Older students will rely more on social media to communicate with friends. Social media apps such as Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp, or Facebook are not official, school-sanctioned channels of communication. Remind your children to be polite, respectful, and appropriate in their communications.
Maintain an appropriate level of decorum in your home
Please remember that your student’s online learning opens a window into your home. Role model appropriate behavior while your student is engaged in a Zoom meeting with their teacher and peers. Please do not use profanity. Enforce the schedule and guidelines you’ve set up in order for your student to be a successful online learner.

What happens next?

3/25/20

Dear STrEaM Families,

As we quarantine, "hunker down" and work from home, I have been reminded that the STrEaM community is amazing. Our teachers are meeting multiple times a day, collaborating, planning lessons, recording video, working in Google Classroom, attending professional learning and reaching out to students and parents. They are busier and working harder than ever!

I know many of you are wondering what happens next? Specifically, what happens next WEEK, when we move from "extended spring break" and supplemental activities to distance/online learning. STrEaM academy has an Academic Plan, which we will publish, laying out how we will provide education to our students.

Here is an overview:  On Tuesday, March 31st, distance learning officially begins!

Platform: We will continue to use Google Classroom as the primary way to deliver lessons, assignments and assessments. You will see news from ASD about new platforms, Canvas and APEX. While those may be good tools, our staff and students have always used Google Classroom for online learning, so this works best for us.
Teachers will also meet regularly with students using Zoom (zoom.us), a Video Conferencing software. This should be fairly easy to download on computers, tablets or smartphones, and is free. It also offers the option to call in with a phone for audio only.

Courses: We will continue providing core courses: Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Math. These will be with the same teacher students had before the closure. These classes will be graded, following our grading policies, by submission of assignments on Google Classroom. We will also facilitate a Health/Wellness class where we used to have PE.
Ungraded, we will continue Advisory: teachers are meeting with advisory groups this week, and will continue weekly check-ins with them for support, communication, and community. We have to stay connected.

Communication and support: We are developing as part of our Academic Plan a school-wide schedule for "office hours" as well as times for individual and small group lessons and support, and weekly Advisory meetings. We are and plan to be available to parents and students, providing support and keeping our community together.

Grading:  Grades will still be in two categories, PA's (Practice Assessments) and MA's (Mastery Assessments). Mastery still equates to 80% of the grade. Grades will still be available in Q for you to view. However, we will "ease" into grading, giving a lot of grace and flexibility.

Technology: ASD had us conduct a survey on tech needs, but I do not want to wait any longer to begin providing Chromebooks to families without devices. Please let me know as soon as possible if you need a device, via phone or email.

We will have a "soft start" next week, with no graded assignments. Our priorities are connecting with students, learning to operate in an online learning environment, collaborating and building community. Notice, the focus of our online learning launch is NOT on content, assignments, or assessments. That will come, but let's build shared efficacy in this new way of learning first. This Friday night at 5 PM I will host an online, open parent meeting to go over this plan and answer your questions. Details forthcoming, but I hope to see you there.

We're in this together.
We're here for you.
We're worried too: this too shall pass.
We're learning all these new tools and ways along with you.
We're a learning community, we will figure this out and make this work.

That is our commitment to you. Please, commit to embracing the challenges before us and join us in this new educational journey.

Message from Staff Friday 3/20

March 20th, 2020

Dear STrEaM Families,

We hope this finds you well, limiting social contact and staying safe during this trying time. We sure miss interacting with parents and students, but we've been meeting daily and collaborating constantly in response to this new challenge. STrEaM staff has been hard at work outlining supplemental activities and resources for next week and preparing Google Classrooms for the extended closure. We will be ready to continue teaching and learning via online and distance formats.

Rather than each of our teachers sending emails today with information and links to supplemental resources and activities, our staff has compiled their messages here (below) into one central place. Below you will find a message from each teacher, and instructions on linking to resources and activities.

On our webpage you will find links to resources that will be helpful for parents and students.  On the main page in the NEWS section is the link to the student daily activity survey for the week of March 23 - 27.  On the FAMILIES page there is a subsection titled COVID-19 Resources & Links. We recently learned GCI is offering free access or upgrades. Learn more here: https://www.gci.com/offers/free-internet

Students are invited to participate in a daily activity challenge: submit this form after 3 PM each day to be eligible for weekly prizes.

Next week, Mrs. Biondich and Mrs. Atkins will be working on packets of materials for families. Please let us know if you have requests for any specific resources. Although most of our staff will continue to work remotely from home, we will have staff in the building during business hours. Please call before coming in.

Also happening next week, each advisor is scheduling an online meeting with their advisory class on Zoom, a video conferencing tool. Advisors will be sending links. Students can join via video, or call in with audio on a phone. This is an optional, informal way for advisors to check in, touch base, and provide a chance for students to socialize.

Below you will find a suggested schedule to structure the day, and the information from our teachers. We hope you enjoy the weekend, finding ways to get outdoors for fresh air and exercise while following the evolving guidelines on social distancing, staying away from public places and gatherings, and staying safe.

Don’t hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do to support you!

Mr. Mokelke & Staff

MR. BIERER:

Hey everybody!  This is Richard Bierer (aka, Mr. B).
I just wanted to give the opportunity to communicate with everyone and remind students that the best way to keep up with math topics is to log in to ALEKS for about 20 to 30 minutes a day (Monday through Friday).
I have posted the students login information on Google Classroom (only should be able to see their own) if they have forgotten their credentials.  If you want, please email me and I will supply you with that information.
Finally, next week I will be doing a Zoom meeting for students in my advisory.  This will be accessible through a link and do not need to have a Zoom account.  It will be a check in with all of the students and give them a chance to voice questions and concerns that I would be able to pass on.I miss all of my students and hope that everyone is doing well at home and staying safe.  Hopefully we can see each other again soon!  Thanks!

3-17 Parent Update

March 17th, 2020

Dear STrEaM Families,

Recently we've limited direct communication with parents and families to defer to ASD and streamline information as the Coronavirus updates began to cascade. Remember, you can contact me any time with questions, concerns, or if you need support. This is why I publish all ways to reach me including my cell number.

As things stand, the earliest we can resume school is Monday, March 30th. Although no final decisions have been made, there is a strong probability that on March 30th, we will begin distance delivery of educational services. We’ve been working hard to prepare for that possibility. Our staff is dedicated to supporting our students and families, and adapting teaching and learning to meet this challenge. As a school that uses Google Classroom and online tools uniformly, we have prepared students for interacting, learning, collaborating, submitting work and doing assessment online. It will take effort, dedication and constant communication between our school, parents and students, but we can make this work. I believe in our teachers, students, and the families who chose our program. I believe we can have high quality, engaging and interactive learning despite the challenges presented to us.

Our counselor, Ms. Bonertz, is on call to support students in need. She can be reached at 742-9004, and will check messages regularly. She is working to set up virtual support groups and links to information for any students needing more support. Ms. Krejca and Mr. Mozen are available to support students with Individual Education Plans, and are working on how to provide support and services for students during the closure.Ms. Biondich is keeping our website, stream.asdk12.org  updated with the latest information and resources for families. We’re here to support you!

Tomorrow is our “official” day for families to pick up personal items from school. Please give us a call so we can meet, greet and support you when you come to pick things up. If you ordered STrEaM gear online, it is here and you can pick it up!

This week staff are working first to contact every one of our families to offer support and gather information. While working remotely, we are meeting several times per day, collaborating and communicating on the challenges in front of us, dedicated to supporting one another and meeting your needs. Our second order of business is preparing supplemental educational activities for this week and next, as we cannot require assignments during the official State school closure. We are rolling out a link on our webpage to supplemental activities. All students can be reading, writing and doing math with one of our online programs (ALEKS, V-Math, Math Whizz and Prodigy). While you will see a lot of suggestions for supplemental activities coming soon, you can start with the basics.

Lastly, I want to say the core of our mission and vision (STEM, Experiential Education and Project-Based Learning) can be sustained through this challenge. The heart of PBL is real-world learning: research, exploration, discovery across content areas. STEM can be found in building, fixing, creating, testing and solving all around us. The great outdoors is right outside our doors, filled with fresh air and miles and miles for social distancing. Our students are already indoctrinated in the idea that they own their learning, that it should be relevant to their lives, that it is collaborative and part of our life experiences. This test will allow them to meet those challenges and perhaps solve some of the problems our world now faces for tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Adam Mokelke, Principal

PEAKS TESTING 2020

2020 PEAKS State Assessment

Test your best! Reach new PEAKS of learning!

Each spring, Alaskan students are provided an opportunity to show what they know. When students show what they know, teachers and parents can partner to promote student success.

The Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools (PEAKS) is Alaska’s summative assessment administered to students in Grades 3-9 (English language arts and mathematics) and grades 4, 8 and 10 (science) each spring. The purpose of a large-scale, summative assessment is to provide parents and schools an overall picture of a student’s progress in meeting the Alaska standards at his/her grade level. The assessment is taken on the computer and is not timed, but each content area takes approximately 100-180 minutes.

Parents can locate resources for the PEAKS assessment, including directions for PEAKS Practice tests, called Online Tools Training and PEAKS Tutorials on the ASD website at www.asdk12.org/PEAKS

Parents can also help by ensuring their children are well rested, eat a nutritious breakfast, and are at school on time for the days of testing. Please avoid scheduling appointments on your child’s testing days.

Students! Get ready to reach new peaks of learning and earn a PEAKS sticker set for showing what you know during our school’s PEAKS testing dates:

TUESDAY 3/30:   6th grade ELA
WEDNESDAY 4/1:  8th grade Science
THURSDAY 4/2: 6th grade Math
FRIDAY 4/3:  8th Grade ELA

MONDAY 4/6: 8th Grade Math
TUESDAY 4/7: 7th Grade Math
THURSDAY 4/9: 7th Grade ELA
FRIDAY 4/10: MAKE-UPS BEGIN

If you have any questions please email or call.

Parent Letter March 3rd, 2020

March 3rd, 2020

Dear STrEaM Families,

Although it is March and the sun has returned, it is still cold outside. This is a friendly reminder that we go outside every day! Please ensure students come dressed for the weather each day. Staying inside is not an option unless it is 10 below or colder, and our PE classes are all outdoor based.

Tomorrow, Wednesday 3/4 we will start the day with a pancake breakfast put on by Ms. Draeger’s elective class. 6th graders will go to Cheney Lake for the morning. They should bring cold weather gear and ice skates if they have them.

There is no school this Friday, 3/6, which is the end of the third quarter. We return from Spring Break on Monday 3/16 to start quarter 4. Students will collect 4th quarter schedules when they return. March 31st through April 10th we will be doing State PEAKS testing: attendance is important for this.

The lottery for the 20-21 School Year is open now, and closes on Thursday March 19th at 5 PM. Encourage those you know to sign up now! Please notify us if you know your child will not be returning next year, as this impacts lottery seats available and space will be limited.

Please purchase a STrEaM Yearbook! Go to https://ybpay.lifetouch.com/ using code: 13049420

Have a great Spring Break!

Sincerely,

STrEaM program overview

Considering Anchorage STrEaM Academy charter for middle school (grades 6, 7 and 8)?

Here is a brief overview of our program to help families make an informed decision:

At STrEaM, we focus on Project-Based Learning: hands-on, collaborative research and cross-curricular education. Students have grade-level classes in core subjects, with support and enrichment options in math and language arts. Electives change each quarter, with options such as art, outdoor survival, dance, archery, and music.  Each student has an Advisory groups for academic support and social-emotional learning.

We emphasize STEM across the curriculum, including robotics, coding, and rocketry. Most students have a STEM class in addition to their grade level science class. Math includes Algebra, Geometry, even Algebra II.  Students have access to Chromebooks, and assignments are on Google Classroom.

An example of Project-Based & STEM learning can be read here: https://rapidsreport.blogspot.com/2019/03/the-mayor-comes-to-stream.html

We go outside every day! This experiential approach includes outdoor-based PE, frequent field trips, accessing local parks, and full day TREKs to places like Arctic Valley, Eklutna Lake, Cheney Lake and more. Classes utilize local parks and engage in the community frequently for research and projects.

We lease space at Wayland Baptist University on Muldoon. School is in session 8 AM until 3 PM, except on Wednesdays when we early release at 12:00 for collaborative teacher planning. Students bring their lunches and eat in classrooms, or sign up for lunch delivery with https://woodenspoonsalaska.schoollunchchoice.com/.

We offer a variety of after school programs, and have our own ASD sports teams for Cross-Country Running and Cross-Country Skiing. Students may participate in after school activities and sports at their neighborhood school as well.

Learning at STrEaM Academy is hands-on, engaging and fun! Our school culture is positive, warm and welcoming. We do middle school right!
