Health Spotlight: Nurse Bethany

Spring is near (hiding under the snow). I love all the sunlight, warmer weather, and mostly the melting! Unfortunately for some, spring is the start of the airborne allergy season. Symptoms include red, itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, headaches, a possible increase in asthma symptoms. If you or your child suffers from airborne allergies now is the time to prepare.

Please make sure you have all over the counter or prescription allergy medications filled and on hand at your home. Give your child his/her allergy medication at home prior to school.

Over the counter allergy medication can be given at school with a signed parent permission, through the end of the school year. Please email, if you have any questions.

Wishing you well- Nurse Bethany. Contact Nurse Bethany at zimpelman_bethany@asdk12.org

Welcome Stephen Bahner

Staff Spotlight: Stephen Bahner

Stephen Bahner, Math

STrEaM is excited to welcome Stephen Bahner to our staff for the 23-24 school year! Mr. Bahner will primarily teach Math at STrEaM Academy. He has been involved with STrEaM in many ways and is excited to join our team full time.

Mr. Bahner (pronounced Bonn - the same as Autobahn highway with no speed limit in Germany) was born & raised in Anchorage, Alaska.  This will be his 15th year as a teacher in ASD.  He taught at Wonder Park/Muldoon as a health teacher for 9 years, and 5 years as a math teacher at Begich Middle School.  This past fall he joined Stream as an Assistant XC Running Coach.

Mr. Bahner has two awesome sons, both of whom have attended STrEaM, and will be adding to his family by getting married this summer!   His family is a very active family who love having fun outside together as often as possible. In the summer, the Bahner family loves to get on their bikes to ride single tracks, play games on the trampoline, rollerblade, play kickball, hike mountains, camp, and explore new places they have never been.  In the winter, they love to find wild ice skating, play outside at our local lakes and parks on ice skates, and powder ski when we get extra snow---this year was great!, cross country ski, skijor, and even took a vacation this year to experience skiing in Colorado!  They learned firsthand that it is so much harder to breathe at 12,900 feet above sea level!

Mr. Bahner has always loved math, and believes students learn so much better when learning has meaning.   Mr. Bahner is consistently described as a fun and goofy teacher with middle schoolers who call him MathSir Bahner (knight of the Math Round Table). He loves making learning fun, and exciting for everyone by connecting math to real life activities, events, professions.  Part of math is learning to use logic, reasoning, identifying problems, and learning how to solve problems. Math gives students a better perspective on how the world works.   Mr. Bahner is excited to have an opportunity to jump into more project based learning, and expand the connection of math and science understanding!

Mr. Bahner is excited to join such a great group of teachers and students at STrEaM!!

Welcome to STrEaM Mr. Bahner!!

Health Spotlight: Nurse Bethany

One way we can model health in our students is to seek ways to improve our own health. The state of Alaska is offering free health coaching programs for Alaskans who want to lose weight, prevent/manage diabetes, lower blood pressure, and stop smoking. Sign up with Fresh Start programs  and a health coach will contact you, including sending you a scale or blood pressure cuff.

Wishing you well- Nurse Bethany. Contact Nurse Bethany at zimpelman_bethany@asdk12.org
