 The Rapids Report

September 23rd, 2024

Dear STrEaM Families, parents and guardians,

One Big Thing: We’ve passed the midway point of quarter 1. It is getting colder, and we are excited to welcome the arrival of fall here at STrEaM. With the cooler weather, we want to ensure that our students are well-prepared to make the most of their outdoor experiences.

Please be sure your children are equipped with the proper outdoor gear. This includes:

  • Warm Clothing: As temperatures drop, please make sure your child has suitable layers to stay cozy during outdoor activities.

  • Rain Gear: A waterproof jacket can make all the difference on wet days.

  • Comfortable Footwear: Proper shoes or boots with good traction will keep feet dry and comfortable during walks and outdoor play.

  • Reflective tape, tags, gear for walkers

  • A name tag or written name on all personal belongings.

By ensuring that your child is equipped with the right outdoor gear, you'll be supporting their safety, comfort, and enjoyment as we continue utilizing the great outdoors as a classroom.

Remember, rain, snow or shine, we go outside every day!

PHONE POLICY IMPLEMENTATION

Students who bring smartphones/connected devices to school have been issued a Yondr locking pouch. Pouches are kept by students and taken home. Devices must be powered off or on airplane mode and locked during the day.  Students may use the front office phone if they need to contact a parent during the school day.

KTUU NEWS WILL BE AT STREAM WEDNESDAY TO DO A STORY ON OUR PHONE POLICY AND POUCHES!

DAILY PROCESS

As students arrive at school, they will:

  1. Turn their phone on airplane mode or power off

  2. Place their phone inside their pouch and secure it in the presence of school staff

  3. Store their pouch in their backpack for the day

At the end of the day, students will unlock their pouch, remove their phone and put their pouch in their backpack.

Students must bring their pouch to school with them each day, and students are responsible for keeping their pouch clean and dry.

Mid-Quarter!  Check Grades and Assignments

We are in the middle of Quarter 1!  Now is a great time to log onto Q/ParentConnect with your student and have a discussion about what they’re learning, grades, and any missing work.  If any questions arise, encourage your student to talk with their teacher(s) and/or help your student send a message to their teacher(s) through Canvas Inbox.  Parents may contact teachers through email.

During Tuesday and Thursday Advisory classes, students are given time to finish work and check grades. It may be helpful to ask your student about how they are utilizing Advisory’s “focused work time.”  If students need more time than Advisory, we encourage them to finish as homework.

👟Cross Country Running

Hey Rapids! Next week’s meet is on Wednesday, 9/25 in Chugiak. Students need to be back at school at 4:20PM to catch the bus. Weather is changing quickly and everyone should be prepared with layers (hats, sweatpants, jacket etc.). Students are scheduled to return from Chugiak at 9PM. During the Think Pink Relay on 9/30, athletes are encouraged to dress up with face paint, silly hats and tutus. Athletes need to be identifiable but are encouraged to have fun with this race.

🏥Health Updates

Increase in Pertussis Activity in Alaska

An outbreak of Whooping Cough (Pertussis) is occurring in Anchorage, including an infant death, resulting in marked increase in pertussis activity this year compared to recent years. Note: There has also been sustained respiratory illness activity associated with viral infections this summer

see: https://health.alaska.gov/dph/Epi/id/Pages/COVID-19/covidandflu.aspx

*Counts are provisional and may be updated. *Includes confirmed and probable cases

• Whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis.

• Pertussis is spread through respiratory droplets (through coughing and sneezing) and sharing saliva

(e.g., kissing and sharing cups/utensils).

• Infected people can spread pertussis to others during the first 2 weeks of their illness.

• Symptoms typically appear 5–10 days after exposure (range 5–21 days) and can last for weeks to months. The illness typically starts with mild cold-like symptoms (runny nose, mild cough, and fever) and can progress to severe coughing spells that can cause vomiting, exhaustion, and the characteristic "whoop" sound when breathing in.

• The best way to prevent pertussis is to get vaccinated and avoid others who are ill.

LEFT & FOUND

Label all items.  If your student is missing something, please have them check the LEFT & FOUND box.  It is located just past the main lobby at the top of the main stairwell.  We neatly lay items out for students to collect, and we help to return items with name tags.  When the collection is FULL of items with no name tags, we have to donate items to Goodwill because we do not have adequate storage space.

Thank you for being a part of the ASA family!
