Rapids Report for 9-9-24

 The Rapids Report

September 9th, 2024

Dear STrEaM Families, parents and guardians,

One Big Thing: The first week of phones in Yondr cases was very successful! Parents, thank you for your support with this. We are already seeing much less distractions, lower levels of disciplinary issues, and much higher student engagement and interactions.

MAP fall testing finishes Tuesday.  A MAP make-up session will be conducted Wednesday after Advisory class.

Thank you for attending our great open house Friday!!

Principal Mokelke

Key information in this Rapids Report:

  • Dates to mark on your calendar

  • Classes start at 08:30 a.m

PHONE POLICY IMPLEMENTATION

Students who bring smartphones/connected devices to school will be issued a Yondr locking pouch. Pouches are kept by students and taken home. Devices must be powered off or on airplane mode and locked during the day.  Students may use the front office phone if they need to contact a parent during the school day.

DAILY PROCESS

As students arrive at school, they will:

  1. Turn their phone on airplane mode or power off

  2. Place their phone inside their pouch and secure it in the presence of school staff

  3. Store their pouch in their backpack for the day

At the end of the day, students will unlock their pouch, remove their phone and put their pouch in their backpack.

Students must bring their pouch to school with them each day, and students are responsible for keeping their pouch clean and dry.

🏥Health Updates

Increase in Pertussis Activity in Alaska
An outbreak of Whooping Cough (Pertussis) is occurring in Anchorage, including an infant death, resulting in marked increase in pertussis activity this year compared to recent years. Note: There has also been sustained respiratory illness activity associated with viral infections this summer
*Counts are provisional and may be updated. *Includes confirmed and probable cases

• Whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis.
• Pertussis is spread through respiratory droplets (through coughing and sneezing) and sharing saliva
(e.g., kissing and sharing cups/utensils).
• Infected people can spread pertussis to others during the first 2 weeks of their illness.
• Symptoms typically appear 5–10 days after exposure (range 5–21 days) and can last for weeks to months. The illness typically starts with mild cold-like symptoms (runny nose, mild cough, and fever) and can progress to severe coughing spells that can cause vomiting, exhaustion, and the characteristic "whoop" sound when breathing in.
• The best way to prevent pertussis is to get vaccinated and avoid others who are ill.

Please feel free to email or call me with any questions!
Wishing you well
~Nurse Bethany

To attend advisory math lab students are to check in with their advisory teacher then come to Mrs. Olendorff’s room #110. For lunch math lab, once students are released for lunch they are to come to Mrs. Olendorff’s room #110. 📚Battle of the Books

Calling all readers! We invite you to join the STrEaM Battle of the Books (BOB) team this year. We will have two groups, a 6th grade group and a 7th/8th grade (Middle School) group. Click this link to view the book lists for each group. Practice will be held during lunch beginning in October, but you can get a head start by reading the books now. The STrEaM library has one copy of each title for both lists, you can also use the public library system, check them out electronically, or even audiobook!

Sincerely, your BOB coaches, Mr. Bahner and Mrs. Lojewski

LEFT & FOUND

If your student is missing something, please have them check the LEFT & FOUND box.  It is located just past the main lobby at the top of the main stairwell.  There are water bottles, jackets, pants, and lunch boxes, and all of them have no name tags.  The collection is FULL, so we have to start donating left and found items to Goodwill on Fri, 9/13.

Thank you for being a part of the ASA family!
