Rapids Report 1-22-24

 The Rapids Report

January 22nd, 2024

Dear STrEaM Families,

It is cold outside! We are an outdoor school, with the motto “outside every day,” and as STrEaM parents I am sure you know by now that we mean it. The great thing is, even in the cold, our students love doing outdoor activities! We will continue to do outdoor activities, breaks, lessons, PE and more. Please make sure your child is prepared for the weather and understands this is part of our program.

Our best recruitment remains word of mouth from you, our STrEaM family. With the lottery opening February 1st, please share about our program and encourage families to apply!

Traffic reminders: always pull as far forward as possible before stopping to drop off or pick up. One car stopping short backs up everyone behind them. Please help this process go smoothly and keep our line moving!  If you are exiting through the neighborhoods, go slow, be cautious and respect our neighbors.

The ASD alternative school lottery will open February 1st and end on March 21st. We welcome applications to all grades, and would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word about our school to incoming 6th grade students. Our student ambassadors will be visiting neighboring elementary schools, family STEM nights and recruitment fairs over the next two months. Recruit a fellow RAPID today: Explorers wanted!

Communicating with teens: Tip of the week!

Suggestions for supporting your middle schooler this quarter:

  • Have a discussion about their “S.M.A.R.T. goals” for Quarter 3.  (Students created goals in many classes and in Advisory last week.)  Ask your student how they are doing with making progress on their goals.

  • Ask your student how they spend their “focused work time” during Advisory classes. (In Advisory classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students are provided time and support with checking their grades in Q/Student Connect and assignments in Canvas.)

  • Ask your student to open their backpack.  Is it organized?  Do they have a binder? Are there loose papers?  If needed, help your student clean-out their backpack.

  • Help your student write assignments, deadlines, and due dates on a planner or calendar.  (We have a paper school planner, and some students choose to use a digital planner.)

  • Speak with your student weekly about assignments, current learning, and ask if they have any missing work.  Guiding questions could be:

    • What have you been learning?

    • How are you doing with STrEaM’s binder organization system?  Are you keeping it clean and organized during Advisory on Tuesdays?

    • What is challenging?  What is interesting?

    • Did you complete each day’s classwork?

    • Do you have unfinished/missing work to do as homework?

    • How is it going asking for help when needed?

Health Updates

There is a lot of yuck in the community right now. Sending a guidance reminder of COVID leave for staff and students. ASD, still matches CDC policy - just like last year.

Isolation

There is also a cool calculator for return dates, if that is easier. https://ldh.la.gov/page/calculator Remember the start day (symptoms or positive test) is Day 0. Out 5 days and then actually return on day 6. If still fevering or feeling worse, please stay out longer. You are likely still contagious, so mask at school until at least day 10, usually the following week.

Please feel free to email or call me with any questions. zimpelman_bethany@asdk12.org

Wishing you well
