Communicating with teens: Tip of the week!

Linda Cliatt-Wayman gave an excellent Ted talk once about going in and fixing a broken school. After listing all the problems with behaviors and academic failures, she asked this question: so what, now what? Many of us find ourselves looking at our teens and feeling disconnected, frustrated, and even hopeless. There are a lot of obstacles we can name. But so what? NOW what? What tools do we have at our disposal to make sure we are giving our kids their best chance at developing healthy communication habits, advocating for themselves, and handling their emotions in productive ways?

Tip 1: Incorporate both quality and quantity time! (purposeful and agenda-free togetherness)

Tip 2: It is never too late or too early to start modeling good communication skills. How?

Tip 3: Talking less and listening without judgment How?

Tip 4: Be willing to compromise

It is OK to do a double take, here. :) Compromise, when there are power struggles afoot, seems like a loss. However, a rigid approach to communicating rules can often result in increased opposition. So, what do we do when we are faced with teen-fueled opposition at every turn?

Knowing what your non-negotiables are goes a long way in communicating healthy boundaries and having the ability to compromise. What typically happens is that we will have some vague idea on boundaries around phone use for example, then be unwilling to compromise on ANY issue regarding use - or go the other way and compromise on ALL issues, but feel run over. What are some boundaries you can set around these issues that address non-negotiables and things you are willing to work on? For example, maybe your non negotiable is that the phone is off by 11:30. How can you compromise and add choice into that? Longer hours on weekends? The ability to create and present an argument for longer hours? An understanding of what is important to you will help clarify it for your teen as well as create space for listening when your teen needs to practice self-advocacy.
