Good Neighbors: traffic safety

January 5th, 2022 

Good morning STrEaM Families,

We greatly appreciate how well our drop-off and pick-up goes, and your patience and understanding navigating this. We do our very best to keep everyone safe and keep things moving. 

This morning we received another call from a concerned person in the neighborhood about the speed and safety of traffic leaving school after drop-off,  exiting onto 32nd Avenue then out through the side streets (Dickson, Robin and Creekside).

Please drive with caution and follow all traffic laws, especially when exiting through the neighborhood.  The speed limit on residential streets is 20 MPH. We will be passing this concern along to APD and asking for their support in monitoring traffic for safety as well.

STrEaM strives to be good neighbors, practice stewardship and maintain positive relationships with the community. Thank you for your understanding and attention to this matter. We appreciate all of you, and want to keep everyone safe.

Mask Requirements & COVID protocols

Reminder that masks are still required in ASD buildings at all times. With the surge of the new strain of COVID, it is imperative that we maintain our health and safety protocols. Mask up, and keep students home if they display any symptoms.

December 13th, 2021

Dear STrEaM Families,

We’ve reached the LAST week of the 2nd quarter! It has been a great first semester at STrEaM, filled with project-based learning, STEM activities, and outdoor experiences. Instead of just the traditional finals, this week our students were finishing towers, trebuchets, roller coasters, cardboard boats and other projects, working in teams and employing engineering, innovation, creativity, problem-solving, and ingenuity. Throughout the week they took breaks from their hard work to go outside sledding, climbing snow mountain, and playing in the park. Education CAN be engaging, hands-on and fun.

This week is Holiday Spirit Week! See the daily spirit themes below.  Please remind students to dress warm and be prepared!

Book Swap

The Student Leadership Book Swap & Bake Sale was a HUGE success! We raised over $200 and collected about 100 books for the school library. Many students participated and took home new books to read and/or delicious baked goods. Thank you families for sending in your books and supporting the bakers.

Just like that, we are on the final countdown for quarter 2 and the first semester! The last day teachers will give Mastery Assessments is this Friday. This just means there will not be Masteries next week, as teachers allow time to complete assignments, projects and assessments.

Book Swap

Student Leadership collected hundreds of books last week! The book swap is this Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. Those who brought books are invited in first and will receive tickets at the door for books or bake sale goods.  Students who did not donate books may purchase tickets for $1 each. Remaining books, and profits made, go towards the STrEaM library.

Dear STrEaM Families,

As we move into December, brrrrr! It is COLD! This week we have Winter MAP testing on Tuesday and Thursday. This allows us to gather valuable data points on Reading and Math, assessing progress since fall and adjusting instruction, groups and supports as needed. On Friday, teachers will send notification to parents of any students with Ds or Fs, giving ample opportunity to improve mastery before the quarter ends.

Book Swap & Bake Sale

Student Leadership will be collecting books for the Swap this week!

Students can bring in books to swap on Wednesday & Thursday. There will be a collection table in the front lobby before & after school on Wednesday, and before school Thursday. Books must be in good condition and appropriate for a middle school reader. The swap will take place next Thursday, December 9th from 2:30-3:30. 

Students will receive tickets for each book they bring. Tickets may be used to swap for books or to “purchase” baked goods.  Books not swapped will be donated to the STrEaM library, profits collected from this event will be put back into our school community.

We’ve reached Thanksgiving week, a short week with no school on Thursday and Friday. We’re so thankful for our amazing and supportive parents, families, board members, volunteers and school community!

This week is a short week, with no school on Thursday 11/25 and Friday 11/26 to celebrate Thanksgiving! December is already right around the corner. My favorite word in an Alaskan Native language is “Quyana.” Quyana is Yupik for “Thank You.” When you say it out loud, it is a beautiful word, conveying grace. I want to thank you all and wish you a great Thanksgiving holiday. Stay warm and stay safe.

Dear STrEaM Families,

Let it snow! Winter has definitely arrived. Parents, PLEASE ensure your children are coming to school dressed for the weather! This week, with temperatures expected to be very cold, we will have lunch indoors (with safety protocols including desk shields). We will continue going outdoors for 15 minutes during lunchtime.

Winter Gear: Outside Every Day!

We are an outdoor-focused program and we go outside every day (except for those RARE and few days it is deemed too cold or unsafe.)

 

Students are expected to dress appropriately for winter weather: bring coats, hats, gloves, boots, ready to walk the trails in Muldoon Park, play on 10 minute breaks, romp in the snow, or run around at lunch. Footwear such as sandals, slippers and crocs (all seen on Friday!) are not adequate or appropriate for the conditions. 

Families in need of support with winter gear, please contact Mr. Mokelke or Mrs. Biondich and we will utilize our resources to support you. 

Alaska Native & American Indian Heritage Month

Join us for #traditionalTuesdays! STrEaM staff and students are invited to wear traditional, cultural clothing, including kuspuks, moccasins, or other regalia. 

This Friday November 19th is National “Rock your Mocs” day! Wear traditional clothing or a teal ribbon in support.

HUGE thank you to outgoing board member and secretary Sylvia Biondich! After being on the board since the school openend, Sylvia is stepping down from the APC to focus on our nonprofit 501c3 STrEaM Anchorage.
