Rapids Report for 10-4-21

 The Rapids Report

October 4th, 2021

Dear STrEaM Families,

Fall is here and the first quarter is nearing a close. This is the 8th week of school! Despite all the challenges of COVID and returning full time after a long delay, things are going very well at STrEaM. Our school culture is strong, positive and supportive, and students are engaged in learning. It may be cold outside, but we are still going outdoors to learn as well as play every single day. Remember to mark your calendars: there is NO SCHOOL the next THREE Fridays (10/8, 10/15, 10/22).

This Week at STrEaM

  • Monday 10/4: Full day schedule, periods 1-7 X-C practice 3:00-4:30

  • Tuesday 10/5: MAP TESTING: READING.  X-C practice 3:00-4:30.

  • Wednesday 10/6: Project Day, Advisory & Early Release.

    • Buffalo Wild Wings Fundraiser- come get your wings!

    • X-C Meet at Kincaid (final meet before the Championships)

  • Thursday 10/7: MAP TESTING: MATH. X-C practice 3:00-4:30.

  • Friday 10/8: NO SCHOOL- STrEaM Only (Wayland Fall Graduation)

APC (Academic Policy Committee)

Two seats on our Academic Policy Committee are open. If interested in running for a seat on our board, contact Mrs. Biondich and plan to attend the APC meeting October 13th at 5:30 PM (Via Zoom).

Student-Led Conferences

ASA will hold Student-Led Conferences on Wednesday 10/20 and Thursday 10/21, from 12:30 PM until 5:00 PM. We do not schedule conferences, drop in during these times at your convenience. The intent is for students to show parents portfolios, present their work and take the lead on their own learning. This is not a time for in-depth meetings with teachers: they are standing by to answer questions and offer support. You may schedule a meeting with teachers outside of conference times if needed.

COVID-19 Protocols & Updates

ASA has a part-time nurse, shared with and based at Highland Academy, to assist in managing COVID reporting and response: Nurse Laura, foster_laura@asdk12.org

  • ASD requires chaperones & volunteers to show proof of vaccination OR to provide negative results from a molecular COVID test within 48 hours from the time of the field trip.

  • Keep ASD Symptom Free: Stay home & get tested if experiencing ANY symptoms

  • Masks required indoors, optional outside

  • All assignments are on Canvas. Quarantined students should also work on iReady & ALEKS for 30-45 minutes per day

  • To register as a Parent Observer on your child’s Canvas account, follow these steps

Rapids Report 9-20-21

 The Rapids Report

September 20th, 2021

Dear STrEaM Families,

We are past the halfway mark of the first quarter. It feels like the snow will be here soon! October is always the fastest, busiest month of the school year, in my experience.

I want to make you aware and ask for your support with a trend in schools on the video app Tiktok called the “devious lick.”  This challenge encourages students to vandalize, steal and damage school bathrooms.  It is a national trend and causing significant property damage.  To date, ASD has experienced 80+ incidences.

Unfortunately, this is ongoing and evolving, and it has been reported that the next level may be stealing phones/electronic devices or other items from staff.  We have heightened awareness and are taking preventive steps. However, as parents, addressing this at home and making your expectations clear will go a long way towards preventing it from happening at STrEaM.

This type of thing is not our culture, and has no place in our program.  Please communicate with your children that vandalism or theft of any kind won't be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action, and if applicable, we will involve the School Resource Officer. Additionally, Wayland Baptist may bring charges for vandalism, damage to the building or university property. In short, we take this very seriously, and hope with your support our students won't join this terrible trend. Thank you for your support with this.

This Week at STrEaM

  • Monday 9/20: Remind students to bring Chromebooks to school!

  • Tuesday 9/21: Block day, Advisory and P. 1-4. 6th grade Kincaid TREK Kincaid Permission

  • Thursday 9/23: Block day, Advisory & P. 5-8

  • Friday 9/24: Full day schedule, periods 1-7

Upcoming Events, Dates, TREKs

  • Fall MAP testing October 5th (Reading) and October 7th (Math).   We will extend advisory period for testing these days.  Students who are absent will make-up MAP testing with the MTSS team

  • Picture Retakes: Monday, October 25

  • No school Friday October 8th: this is different from the ASD calendar because of the Wayland fall graduation

  • If you are interested in chaperoning any TREKs please complete the Volunteer Form, link here

Chromebooks & Devices

All students were issued a Chromebook and charger, unless they have a personal device instead.  We have no spare Chromebooks to check out when students forget them, and this is a frequent issue. Additional Chromebooks have been ordered. However, we do not know when we will receive these, based on demand and shortages.

We need your support:

  • Please help students remember to bring their Chromebooks

  • Please remind them to plug in and charge Chromebooks each night

  • If students have their own device for school, please make sure they bring it

COVID-19 Protocols & Updates

ASD now requires field trip chaperones or volunteers to show proof of vaccination OR to provide negative results from a molecular COVID test within 48 hours from the time of the field trip.

ASD no longer requires close contacts to quarantine. Keep ASD Symptom Free: Stay home & get tested if experiencing ANY symptoms. Masks required indoors, optional outside.
