9-7-21 Rapids Report

The Rapids Report

September 7th, 2021

Dear STrEaM Families,

Welcome to Week 4: we hope your Labor Day long weekend was rewarding, and that you were able to enjoy the great Alaskan outdoors. We are nearing the midpoint of the first quarter, enjoying beautiful fall weather, and immersed in TREKS, projects and engaging learning opportunities.

This Week at STrEaM

  • Tuesday, 9/7: 8th Grade McHugh Creek Rec Area TREK McHugh Permission

  • Wednesday: APC Meeting at 5:30 PM

  • Friday: our first X-C meet, 5:30 PM at Service

iReady

By now most students have completed the iReady Reading and Math diagnostic. Quarantined students CAN do this at home, it just has to be during school hours. Our MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports) is using this data to identify students needing support in reading and math. iReady provides an individualized learning program, which can be followed at home each night. Please include this in your daily homework routine!

School Policies

  • Our device policy is "off and away during the day." Students should only use electronic devices with the permission of a staff member, for a specific educational purpose
  • While we allow students to wear hats at STrEaM, we do not allow hoods indoors for many reasons, including hiding the face/student identity and possibly concealing earbuds/headphones
  • Always wear or bring appropriate clothing and gear for the outdoors. We go outside every day, and it is not optional!
  • Students on wheels must wear helmets and reflective gear (Municipal Code 9.38.200)

  • Everyone who walks through our doors will be treated with Dignity and Respect

Migrant Education

This year STrEaM has a Migrant Education Student Success Coach (SSC), Allison Foust. We have quite a few students who qualify, and possibly many more not yet signed up!

What is Migrant Education?

The Federal Migrant Education Program assists in supporting high-quality and comprehensive educational programs and services during the school year and, as applicable, during the summer or intersession periods, that address the unique educational needs of migratory children.

The goal of ASD's Migrant Ed Program (MEP), is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment. Migrant Education is a federally funded program that is authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

Who is eligible? Your child may be! Has anyone in your family been involved in any of the following activities during the past three years?

□ Subsistence fishing

□ Commercial fishing

□ Cannery work

□ Subsistence berry picking

□ Logging

□ Other agricultural or farm work

Have your children (birth to not yet graduated) made an overnight trip or moved within the past 3 years with you, someone at least 14 years old, or by themselves to participate in one or more of the above activities and stayed overnight for at least 7 nights in a calendar year?

Find you if your child is eligible for awesome benefits and services! Eligibility Questionnaire: MEP Eligibility

Rapids Report 8-30-21

 The Rapids Report

August 30th, 2021

Dear STrEaM Families,

Heading into week 3, we are off to a great start.  This week students learned our regular schedule, found classes, used planners to record assignments and information, and acclimated to the flow of the school year, settling into the first quarter groove.

iReady

Students took iReady Reading and Math diagnostics which will show us individual learning levels and identify needs for support.  Our MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports) team will use this data to implement a support system in reading and math, pulling students in small groups for targeted instruction. iReady builds a learning program for each student in reading and math, which can be followed at home each night. Please include this in their daily homework routine!

Notice: students riding wheels to and from school MUST wear a helmet, per Municipal Code! Reflective gear is important, safety first!

TREKs

Tuesday, 8/31 6th Grade Team Challenge Course

This event is designed in collaboration with our partner organization Onward & Upward to build positive relationships and culture with our 6th grade students.  The Team Challenge Course will engage students in meaningful activities to practice and promote trust, communication, collaboration, and a growth mindset. Please make sure that your student comes to school on Tuesday dressed to be outside for most of the day, with a water bottle, and wearing appropriate footwear (tennis shoes or hiking boots).

Universal masking required inside ASD schools. Masking outside is optional.  We are now requiring desk shields when students are unmasked to eat or drink (primarily lunchtime). Students have done an excellent job masking up & staying safe.

STrEaM now has a part-time Nurse, Nurse Laura, whom we share with Highland Academy.

Rapids Report 8-13-21

 This week at STrEaM Academy

August 13th, 2021

Dear STrEaM Families,

The first day of school is this Tuesday, August 17th! We are excited to welcome our students and kick off the 6th year of school at Anchorage STrEaM Academy.

Welcome Week

The first day of school is Tuesday, August 17th. August 17-20th we have “Welcome Week.”

Tuesday we will begin the day by distributing paper schedules and with an assembly in the auditorium.

Students should bring MINIMAL supplies & materials Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, as they will be engaged in activities and rotations. They only need lunch, a writing utensil, and appropriate outdoor clothing. We will be going outside, including walking to Foothills Park, rain or shine. Students will also be tie-dying T-shirts on Thursday. While we will follow lab safety protocols and keep a clean craft space, accidents do happen. Students should consider wearing clothes that they would not mind getting stained. Friday is a regular full-schedule day. Students should bring all supplies for the binder set up procedure in Language Arts classes on Friday.

Traffic Drop off & Pick up

Drop off begins at 7:45 AM. Please follow the cones and staff directing traffic. Pull as far forward as possible before stopping to let your child out of the vehicle. Students will line up outside until we open the doors.

Please remember it is unlawful to be on electronic devices while driving in a school zone.

Please drive slowly and respectfully in the neighborhood, watching for pedestrians and bicycles, as many of our students walk to and from school.

Pick up is at 3:00 M/T/TH/F, and at 12:00 on Wednesdays. Please follow the traffic pattern, cones and staff directions.

You may also find a spot to park and wait if you prefer.

Lunch at STrEaM

Students should bring a cold lunch on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Lunch is at home, on your own on Wednesday.

Please limit hot lunch items: microwave availability is limited. We ask that students NOT bring microwavable foods such as cup o’ noodles, popcorn, hot pockets.

After School Activities

We are in the process of scheduling after school clubs. We are seeking volunteers or local vendors for Wednesday clubs.  After School clubs and activities will begin the week of August 30th (with the exception of X-C Running).

X-C Running

Coaches Mozen and Perkins are very excited to start another season of Cross Country Running at STrEaM! Registration Papers. Practice begins Thursday 8/19 at 3:00 PM. Coach Mozen can be reached at mozen_howard@asdk12.org
