Dear STrEaM Families,

We’re celebrating our cross country running team and coach Perkins for a great first meet on Friday! Thank you to all our parents and volunteers for your support. We had students finish in the top 10 in 3 of 4 races!!

Picture Day

Picture day is THIS Monday, September 12th! 

Arctic Valley TREKs

We’re TREKking to Arctic Valley this week and next! This is our annual beginning of the year field trip to hike, pick berries, and enjoy time in the alpine environment. Electronic permission forms can be found on our school website’s homepage or here. Please complete a permission form for your student asap!

Grade-levels will visit Arctic Valley on the following dates:

8th Grade - Tuesday 9/13

7th Grade - Thursday 9/15

6th Grade - Thursday 9/22


Parents please help your student/s prepare for the Arctic Valley TREK by making sure that they come prepared for the weather on the day of their TREK. Students need to bring: good sturdy walking or hiking shoes, a coat for rain/wind, a cold lunch, a full water-bottle and a backpack to hold their things. If you have any questions, please contact gatlin_megan@asdk12.org

Academic Policy Committee (APC)

The “Academic Policy Committee” or APC is our governing board. STrEaM’s APC meets the second Wednesday of each month at 5:30 PM. Call or email with any questions or to be on the agenda. APC Meeting THIS Wednesday, September 14th. 

X-C Running

Bake Sale

The Student Leadership Special will have a table set-up to sell baked goods on Wednesday, September 21 at 11:30-12:30 to raise money for the Fall Dance.  We could use a few more bakers.  Please contact smith_emily@asdk12.org if you are interested in helping.  We would also appreciate your support in purchasing baked goods that day! :) 

Next Month: Fall Dance!

  • During school hours on Wednesday, October 5 in the WBU Auditorium

  • Students may wear school-appropriate costumes or formal attire 

  • Pizza will be sold at $2/slice.  

  • We welcome snack and drink donations. 

  • Students should bring indoor shoes to dance in safely and a water bottle.

  • Must be present at school that day to attend.  

  • Only STrEaM students may attend.

  • All students will attend, but they do not have to dance.  One side of the auditorium will have tables and games.  A quiet room will be available for those who need it.

  • Organized by Student Leadership Special. Contact smith_emily@asdk12.org with any questions.

Drop-off and Pick-Up

  • Pull as far forward as possible before stopping. Please do not stop if there is space in front of you to pull forward. Pulling as far forward as possible reduces traffic back-up. 

  • Maintain two lanes: inside lane for pick up/drop off, outside lane for passing and exiting. 

  • It is unlawful to be on electronic devices while driving in a school zone. 

  • Drive slowly in the neighborhood & watch for pedestrians & bicycles: many of our students walk to and from school.

Lunch at STrEaM

Lunch is generally outdoors at STrEaM, unless the weather is prohibitive. Students must bring their own cold/sack lunch. We keep emergency lunches on hand, and ask for support with providing these: LUNCH DONATIONS

General School Policies 

  • ASA is an Outdoor School. Dress for the weather: We go outside every day! 

  • Dress appropriately for school as well as the weather

  • Everyone who walks through our doors will treat others with dignity and respect

  • All ASD policies as outlined in the student handbook apply to our school

Dear STrEaM Families,


We hope you’ve enjoyed our first long weekend! It is fall in Alaska, a beautiful time of year. This month we will be outdoors as much as possible, including our annual trips to Arctic Valley. These are special events for our school, a day in the outdoors picking berries, hiking, building community and appreciation for our environment. Our first X-C meet is this week as well- GO RAPIDS!

We need parent chaperones!  If you are interested in being a chaperone for one of the above dates or have any questions, please contact gatlin_megan@asdk12.org. We do have a couple volunteers for the 7th & 6th grade TREKs already: Thank you to those volunteers. 

There is still room for more and we NEED parent chaperones for the 8th grade. If you have not yet completed the ASD online volunteer application, please do so asap! 


Social-Emotional Learning

SEL lessons happen in Advisory on Wednesday each week. Topic this week- Positive Values 

General School Policies: Dress Code

Parents/Guardians please help us by making sure that your students are dress appropriately for school and for the weather.  Students should be prepared to go outside every day. Students should also be dressed in a manner that does not detract from or disrupt the learning environment. Clothing that is too revealing, promotes violence, gangs, drugs, alcohol or weapons is not allowed. If a student is dressed inappropriately they will be asked to change or cover up and parents shall be notified.

Rapids Report for 8-29-22

 The Rapids Report

August 29th, 2022

Dear STrEaM Families,


We’ve completed our first full week of school, settling into our schedule and routines. Can you believe this is the last week of August? Fall is usually a beautiful time in Alaska, so we are holding out hope the rain will subside in September for all of our outdoor learning and adventures, including TREKS to Arctic Valley. We’re off to a great start for this school year!


If you are interested in Wednesday after school learning lab, contact us to sign up. This is a focused, academic study hall/homework time. Students will be expected to work on academics during this time, and will not be able to attend if they are disruptive or off task. 


This week we are MAP testing in Advisory on Tuesday and Thursday. MAP is a nationally normed test in Math and Reading, giving us valuable data on students which allow us to better support their learning. 


Next week: NO SCHOOL MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5TH

X-C Running team is off to a strong start.  Back to back years with a 40-student team!  Thank you families for all the support so far.  If willing and able we are still taking snack donations.  Please speak to Coach Perkins if looking for suggestions. IMPORTANT! Parents, please complete these mandatory forms as soon as possible: Annual STrEaM Forms. For the School Supply List follow this link. Please write your child’s name on outdoor clothing, lunch boxes and water bottles.
