Rapids Report 9-20-21

 The Rapids Report

September 20th, 2021

Dear STrEaM Families,

We are past the halfway mark of the first quarter. It feels like the snow will be here soon! October is always the fastest, busiest month of the school year, in my experience.

I want to make you aware and ask for your support with a trend in schools on the video app Tiktok called the “devious lick.”  This challenge encourages students to vandalize, steal and damage school bathrooms.  It is a national trend and causing significant property damage.  To date, ASD has experienced 80+ incidences.

Unfortunately, this is ongoing and evolving, and it has been reported that the next level may be stealing phones/electronic devices or other items from staff.  We have heightened awareness and are taking preventive steps. However, as parents, addressing this at home and making your expectations clear will go a long way towards preventing it from happening at STrEaM.

This type of thing is not our culture, and has no place in our program.  Please communicate with your children that vandalism or theft of any kind won't be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action, and if applicable, we will involve the School Resource Officer. Additionally, Wayland Baptist may bring charges for vandalism, damage to the building or university property. In short, we take this very seriously, and hope with your support our students won't join this terrible trend. Thank you for your support with this.

Chromebooks & Devices

All students were issued a Chromebook and charger, unless they have a personal device instead.  We have no spare Chromebooks to check out when students forget them, and this is a frequent issue. Additional Chromebooks have been ordered. However, we do not know when we will receive these, based on demand and shortages.

We need your support:

  • Please help students remember to bring their Chromebooks

  • Please remind them to plug in and charge Chromebooks each night

  • If students have their own device for school, please make sure they bring it

The Rapids Report

September 13th, 2021

Dear STrEaM Families,

We are now in week 5, halfway through the First Quarter. We are finding that students need to re-learn social interactions and appropriate behaviors, and we’re holding grade-level assemblies to talk through this with them. This is surely due to the long time away from regular school and online learning. Please help us by emphasizing basic social interaction norms: be kind, speak kind, show respect to self and others, keep hands to self and do the right thing.

The goal of ASD's Migrant Ed Program (MEP), is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment. Migrant Education is a federally funded program that is authorized by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

Who is eligible? Your child may be! Has anyone in your family been involved in any of the following activities during the past three years?

□ Subsistence fishing

□ Commercial fishing

□ Cannery work

Have your children (birth to not yet graduated) made an overnight trip or moved within the past 3 years with you, someone at least 14 years old, or by themselves to participate in one or more of the above activities and stayed overnight for at least 7 nights in a calendar year?
