Rapids Report 12-4-23

 The Rapids Report

December 4th, 2023

Dear STrEaM Families,

We’ve reached December! This time between Thanksgiving and Winter Break is a fast-paced period as we race towards the end of the quarter. D/F notifications will go out on Friday, warning you if your child is in danger of not passing. Next Friday is the last day for Mastery Assessments (like tests, finals, final projects and presentations). We are quickly accelerating towards the end of Quarter 2.

We have MAP TESTING this week- see below for details.

An early reminder: Monday, January 8th is a professional development day for STrEaM Staff and NOT a school day for students. Our APC voted to approve this in our calendar last year. This gives our staff a day to plan, prepare, and participate in meetings and professional development before students are back in the building. Please mark your calendars and plan accordingly!

Please plan to attend our Family Night on December 20th! We are challenging families to participate in our STEM Challenge of building a gingerbread house!

Communicating with teens: Tip of the week!

Linda Cliatt-Wayman gave an excellent Ted talk once about going in and fixing a broken school. After listing all the problems with behaviors and academic failures, she asked this question: so what, now what? Many of us find ourselves looking at our teens and feeling disconnected, frustrated, and even hopeless. There are a lot of obstacles we can name. But so what? NOW what? What tools do we have at our disposal to make sure we are giving our kids their best chance at developing healthy communication habits, advocating for themselves, and handling their emotions in productive ways?

Tip 1: Incorporate both quality and quantity time! (purposeful and agenda-free togetherness)

Tip 2: It is never too late or too early to start modeling good communication skills. How?

  • Share your day. How did you work through your frustrations? What are you grateful for?

  • Share stories. What were you like as a kid? What do you remember about your parents? About your feelings and friendships?

Being transparent about how you cope with big feelings is a great way to help your student to navigate their own - especially when there is conflict. For example, when having a heated discussion with your teen, saying something like this can be powerful. “I am feeling too angry to talk right now. I need to step away and take a break. We can talk more when I’ve had a chance to calm down.” Coming back and discussing why you needed a break and how your feelings were affecting your communication could be a great way to begin discussing how emotions often cloud our judgment and our ability to communicate effectively.

MATH CLUB

Math club is held every Wednesday and is available to all students who complete a permission form. Students are selected by academic need per quarter with 20 spots available. It begins at 12:00 and students are to bring a lunch, so their brains are nourished for learning. Pick up time is promptly at 1:45.

Quarter 2 math club off to a great start! Students are eager to work on mastery retakes and further develop their math skills through iReady and Aleks applications. Students are also enjoying math games as they revisit math fundamentals in a fun and interactive way.
