Rapids Report 12-5-22

 The Rapids Report

December 5th, 2022

Dear STrEaM Families,

It’s December! Good reminders as we reach the colder and darker months include (1) driving carefully and watching for pedestrians, and (2) making sure your child wears appropriate outdoor clothing.

Weekly Schedule

12/5 Monday: Full day, periods 1-7

12/6 Tuesday: Block A day,  Advisory & P. 1-4

12/7 Wednesday: PROJECT DAY! Early Release 12:00 PM

12/8 Thursday: Block B day, Advisory & P. 5-8

12/9 Friday: Full day, periods 1-7

Celebrating our Students

STrEaM has a PUBLISHED, AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR!  8th grader Albert Ka’aumoana Perkins and his siblings, students at Bartlett High School, wrote and published a children’s book! The book has been nominated for the Outstanding Creator Awards Winter 2023, and just won a Literary Titan Goold Book Award.

Mahalo Does Not Mean Trash focuses on the Hawaiian value of gratitude. It is out NOW on Amazon and other book retailers.

Albert and his siblings formed their own company, Perks Publishing LLC.  Albert is the “Chief People Officer” of Perk Publishing. They hope to empower other children to create books and share their own stories. We are hoping to host a book signing in the near future!

APC (Academic Policy Committee)

Next APC Meeting Wednesday 12/15

Agendas and minutes posted on https://www.asdk12.org/stream

Social-Emotional Learning:

This week’s topic is communicating emotions! Students will discuss and practice this skill in Advisory this week. Ask your child about healthy, appropriate ways they can talk about their feelings. One strategy that can be helpful is "name it to tame it." Encourage them to name the emotion they are feeling, saying it out loud.

Assessment

Winter MAP testing is nearly complete! The last make-up session is Wednesday December 7th.

Skiing Season Updates

Coach Mozen has returned from retirement for another season! Coach Perkins will assist again, along with Ms. Wesley, who is joining our coaching staff for the first time. Yes, we have so many skiers we need three coaches! You can help by volunteering to supervise or drive, or donating to sponsor a skier.

Upcoming TREK for 8th Grade

8th Graders will travel via bus to the West High Pool on Tuesday, December 13th to test their cardboard boats. Please complete the online permission form: Regatta Permission. We are no longer looking for donations of large pieces of cardboard for building boats, but we are still looking for chaperones for the event, especially those who can help drive boats to the pool!

Upcoming TREK for 6th Grade

Our 6th graders are bussing to the UAA Planetarium! December 20th from 10-2. Every student needs to have a permission slip and pay the $10.00 bus/ticket fee. Complete the online permission slip: Planetarium Permission and bring the $10 fee in cash or check to Mrs. Biondich.

Lunch at STrEaM

Please be sure your child packs a cold lunch. We do not have a lunch program or lunchroom. Lunch is generally outdoors unless the weather is prohibitive. 45% of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes and we hope to help them with free lunches when necessary. We have been serving between 8 and 17 lunches per day this month. If you are able to help providing these here is the sign-up: Nov / Dec Lunch Donations
