Message from Staff Friday 3/20

March 20th, 2020

Dear STrEaM Families,

We hope this finds you well, limiting social contact and staying safe during this trying time. We sure miss interacting with parents and students, but we've been meeting daily and collaborating constantly in response to this new challenge. STrEaM staff has been hard at work outlining supplemental activities and resources for next week and preparing Google Classrooms for the extended closure. We will be ready to continue teaching and learning via online and distance formats.

Rather than each of our teachers sending emails today with information and links to supplemental resources and activities, our staff has compiled their messages here (below) into one central place. Below you will find a message from each teacher, and instructions on linking to resources and activities.

On our webpage you will find links to resources that will be helpful for parents and students.  On the main page in the NEWS section is the link to the student daily activity survey for the week of March 23 - 27.  On the FAMILIES page there is a subsection titled COVID-19 Resources & Links. We recently learned GCI is offering free access or upgrades. Learn more here: https://www.gci.com/offers/free-internet

Students are invited to participate in a daily activity challenge: submit this form after 3 PM each day to be eligible for weekly prizes.

Next week, Mrs. Biondich and Mrs. Atkins will be working on packets of materials for families. Please let us know if you have requests for any specific resources. Although most of our staff will continue to work remotely from home, we will have staff in the building during business hours. Please call before coming in.

Also happening next week, each advisor is scheduling an online meeting with their advisory class on Zoom, a video conferencing tool. Advisors will be sending links. Students can join via video, or call in with audio on a phone. This is an optional, informal way for advisors to check in, touch base, and provide a chance for students to socialize.

Below you will find a suggested schedule to structure the day, and the information from our teachers. We hope you enjoy the weekend, finding ways to get outdoors for fresh air and exercise while following the evolving guidelines on social distancing, staying away from public places and gatherings, and staying safe.

Don’t hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do to support you!

Mr. Mokelke & Staff

Staff messages and supplemental resources

MR. BIERER:

Hey everybody!  This is Richard Bierer (aka, Mr. B).
I just wanted to give the opportunity to communicate with everyone and remind students that the best way to keep up with math topics is to log in to ALEKS for about 20 to 30 minutes a day (Monday through Friday).
I have posted the students login information on Google Classroom (only should be able to see their own) if they have forgotten their credentials.  If you want, please email me and I will supply you with that information.
Finally, next week I will be doing a Zoom meeting for students in my advisory.  This will be accessible through a link and do not need to have a Zoom account.  It will be a check in with all of the students and give them a chance to voice questions and concerns that I would be able to pass on.I miss all of my students and hope that everyone is doing well at home and staying safe.  Hopefully we can see each other again soon!  Thanks!

MS. GOODMAN:

8th graders:

Hello 8th grade students! I miss you all!  I hope you are able to get outside each day and see the days getting longer and warmer each day!

I have posted on Google Classroom a note about how you can check out the Covid outbreak on ArcGIS online and learn all sorts of amazing things.   I also posted info how to get access to ASD’s digital library from a librarian friend of mine. AND info about the Global March Book Madness!

Soon we will be starting our new unit -- which will be about Food Security.  How many of you are feeling “food secure” right now?  Check on google classroom for updates.  I plan to follow similar structures as to what we do in class -- as much as possible.  Once we get rolling with instruction again, I will be expecting you to go to the site 3x a week -- just like normal, {sorta kinda}.  I am looking forward to connecting with you all very soon!!

Goodman's Advisory:

Check a new google classroom advisory for info about meeting by Zoom next week!

Music students:

Hardly a better way to spend this wacky time than making music!!  Practice your bowing, scales and changing chords.  Find your favorite songs on line and learn how to play them!

Hey 6th and 7th ELA Students,

If you are looking to keep practicing your ELA skills I only have two directions for you: keep reading and keep writing (for fun!) In my Google Classroom I have listed a way to check out digital library books from ASD if you are in need of reading material. I have also linked a list of 300 writing prompts. Find a random number generator, a 10 minute timer, and “write on.”
