Rapids Report for January 9th, 2023

 The Rapids Report

 January 9th, 2023

Dear STrEaM Families,

Welcome back! We’re excited to start the second semester at STrEaM. We will be outside every day, enjoying the beautiful winter and all this snow. Please make sure students are always dressed for the weather.

Update snow day make-up

Currently, we are not planning to extend the school day by 30 minutes. Our plan is to instead make up the missed days by extending three Wednesdays (on short

weeks) to full days in addition to other district calendar adjustments (2/24 is now a school day).  This is pending ASD approval.

The following Wednesdays (on short weeks) are proposed full school days (no early release):

Wednesday 2/22 (No school Monday 2/20 Presidents’ Day)

Wednesday 3/8 (No school Friday 3/10 End Q3/Spring Break)

Wednesday 4/19 (No school Friday 4/21 WBU Spring Graduation)

Weekly Schedule

1/9 Monday: Full day P. 1-7

1/10 Tuesday: A day Advisory, P. 1-4

1/11 Wednesday: PROJECT DAY! Early Release 12:00 PM

  • APC Meeting 5:30 PM

1/12 Thursday: B day Advisory, P. 5-8

  • First Ski practice

1/13 Friday: Full day P. 1-7

  • Ski practice

Ski Season

Coach Mozen has returned to coach skiing again this season! He is joined by assistant coaches Perkins and Wesley. The first practice is this Thursday, after school in Room 6.

Schedule changes

We’ve made adjustments to the schedule for Q3. 6th and 7th grade students will pick up new schedules Monday morning.

Welcome new staff

While Ms. Hayden is on leave, Melody McAllister will teach 7th grade Language Arts and Social Studies for the first two weeks of the quarter. Mrs. McAllister is a STrEaM parent with 15 years teaching experience and certification in the State of Texas.

August Wimberger will take over 6th grade Outdoor Adventure PE. Mr. Wimberger has a background in outdoor experiential education and experience subbing at STrEaM. He is an avid outdoorsman and excited to get students outside every day!

Scott Maxwell will teach Pre-Algebra this quarter. Mr. Maxwell has worked as both a math tutor and classroom teacher, including teaching math at our school. Originally from the Washington DC area, he calls Alaska home now. He has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Maryland.

We are excited to have these awesome teachers on board for the third quarter!

Health Spotlight: Nurse Bethany

In January on select Thursdays our 7th graders will all be seen by our nursing staff for health assessments, per ASD Guidelines. Students should bring their prescription lens for their vision check. More information will follow.

Welcome to STrEaM Nurse Bethany! Nurse Bethany is based at Muldoon Elementary, and will be providing nursing support to STrEaM for the remainder of this school year.

Here is a message from Nurse Bethany:

Greetings!

My name is Bethany Zimpelman and I have been a pediatric nurse for 20 years. This is my fourth year working with the Anchorage School District and I am looking forward to getting to know all of you more. I am passionate about connecting people and resources to help them become their healthiest selves and strongly believe students must healthy to be educated and educated to be healthy. I especially enjoy discussing and learning about allergies, ADHD, neurodiversity, culturally responsive care, vision/hearing needs, eating disorders, and mental healthcare. If I can help you or your students find local referrals or information, please let me know.

There is still an enormous amount of viral illness (Influenza A, RSV, COVID-19) in our community, consider testing before holiday gatherings. You can order free COVID tests from https://www.covid.gov/tests. Wishing you well! Nurse Bethany

Rapids Report 12-12-22

 The Rapids Report

December 12th, 2022

Dear STrEaM Families,

It’s December! Hopefully we are able to attend school (safely) for the remaining two weeks. Friday is the last day for mastery assessments, and grade notifications have gone out for any students in danger of not passing. We’re almost to Winter Break: let’s finish strong!!

When we return to school, the pick-up and drop-off line will be impacted by the snow plowed to the north of the parking lot. This likely means back-ups further down Old Muldoon. Please do NOT block driveways. Come early and/or park if possible. Practice patience and grace with staff and other drives.

Weekly Schedule

12/12 Monday: NO SCHOOL - WEATHER

12/14 Wednesday: PROJECT DAY! Early Release 12:00 PM
