11-27-17 Rapids Report

The RAPIDS Report

News from Anchorage STrEaM Academy

November 27th, 2017

Dear STrEaM friends and families,

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. We had a pancake breakfast and assembly last Wednesday, then watched the film “Hidden Figures” to launch into the long weekend. With shorter days, less sunlight, and the flu making it's way around, the break came at a good time. We can now resume school rested and refreshed, and prepare to finish strong.

We’ve had a lot of staff and students sick lately, so we are emphasizing the most effective prevention for the spread of germs: handwashing.  We watched this great TED talk last week https://www.ted.com/talks/myriam_sidibe_the_simple_power_of_hand_washing
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) calls handwashing a “do it yourself vaccine” https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/index.html

Planning: We have just 4 weeks of school left. Final assessments will be given or due on 12/14 and 12/15. Wednesday 12/20 will be holiday craft sessions, and our last day of the semester, Thursday 12/21, will be our annual Cheney Lake Solstice TREK.

School Culture: Last week we recognized first quarter honor roll students and those with perfect attendance! Congratulations to all of our hard working students who made honor roll or had perfect attendance.
Our Home Economics class, led by awesome science teacher Ms. Draeger, collected a full barrel of green beans for the Food Bank, supporting their annual Thanksgiving dinner for those in need!

Communication: 2nd quarter midterm progress grades are complete and posted!  Parents of ASD students will notice additional features in their ParentConnection account as part of our upgrade from Zangle to Q.
Added features and benefits include:
  • User-friendly and easier to navigate
  • PIN and password can be retrieved via email
  • Contact information can now be edited at any time
  • Grade percentages are viewable next to the student letter grade
  • Progress reports can be viewed and printed
A tutorial video and frequently asked questions are available on the login page. If you have questions about any of these new features, please contact the front office staff at your child's school. If you do not know your PIN or password, click the "Reset Your Password" link.

We talk here at school about ending each conversation, meeting, or class period with a positive, inspiring message. This can be specific to a situation or a theme, or it can be a repeated "one liner" motto reflecting core values. We call this a "launch." For parents, the last thing we say to our children as they walk out the door or get out of the car will resonate with them throughout the day. Is the last thing you say a positive, inspiring message? What is your "launch"?

10-27-17 Rapids Report

The RAPIDS Report
News from Anchorage STrEaM Academy
October 27th, 2017
Dear STrEaM friends and families,

We’ve started the second quarter and nearly reached the end of October. In partnership with Randy Dowd and “Onward and Upward” we completed our second TREK of the year, to Eklutna Lake. Students got place-based lessons on our ecosystem, watershed, and protecting public lands, while spending a great day outdoors. As we move quickly through fall and winter looms closer, we will still seek opportunities to get outside, so being dressed and prepared for inclement weather is important.

Our program is driven by key three components of our charter: STEM, project-based learning and experiential education. All we do this year is aligned to our three school-wide goals: positive school culture, communication, and planning and preparation.

School Culture: Our students completed their “Sock-tober” drive to gather socks for the homeless, and led and assembly with activities and games designed to enhance school culture and combat bullying. I am personally excited about and proud of the leadership role our student government is taking to strengthen our school culture. Next week is “Spirit Week,” which they requested and planned. We continue building a strong, safe climate where everyone is safe, respected and able to engage in learning.

Communication: This week we completed parent-teacher conferences, implementing student portfolios and engaging students more in the process. It was a success we will build on, working towards student-led conferences. This was a great opportunity for staff and families to communicate face to face. Online platforms are an important way for us to communicate, and recently we’ve focused on improving our ASD website. Check out http://stream.asdk12.org/ and give us feedback..

Planning: Our staff planned overviews for the entire second quarter, taking us up to the last day on December 21st.  On that Thursday  we will hold our annual Winter Solstice TREK at Cheney Lake, launching into winter break. Friday staff worked in teams planning cross-curricular second quarter projects. I had the opportunity to hear them present project plans, and I am very excited for the cool things students will be doing! Second quarter will go quickly, with just 36 instructional days left, and 3 short weeks on the schedule.

We’re looking forward to a great second quarter. November promises to be fast, busy and fun: Full STrEaM Ahead!
