9-15-17 Rapids Report

The RAPIDS Report

News from Anchorage STrEaM Academy

September 15, 2017
Dear STrEaM friends and families,

Open House last Friday was great! We had a strong turnout, and a lot of great conversation about our school, teaching and learning. Thank you all for coming and engaging with us to build a stronger school community.

We are excited to announce our “Women in STEM” event for Friday,October 6th, 5 to 7 PM. While all our students, boys and girls, are important and valued, we recognize that STrEaM has a 2:1 male to female ratio, which is reflective of STEM careers and fields. Our goal with this event is to introduce girls to and engage them in STEM fields. We will have presenters from the community, refreshments, an engineering challenge and STEM door prizes. STrEaM students who bring a (student) guest will receive a ticket for a chance to win a STrEaM hoodie. We are seeking volunteers, and inviting you to attend. Please join us!

StrEaM Academy has elected Student Council Officers for School Year 2017 - 2018!
Congratulations to: President Aerial Yang, Vice President Chase Katelnikoff, Secretary Hannamay Savage and Treasurer Ethan Clarke!

After school clubs are starting this week. See below for details. We are still seeking to add clubs in addition to Robotics, Choir and Schools Next.

Our goals for this school year include fostering a safe, positive school culture; planning and preparing effectively and intentionally to engage and meet the needs of all stakeholders; and communicating positively and frequently with stakeholders across a variety of platforms and levels. Please continue to give us feedback on these efforts so we can better serve you and our kids!

The RAPIDS Report
News from Anchorage STrEaM Academy

September 1, 2017
Dear STrEaM friends and families,

It is already September! Fall in Alaska is a beautiful time of transformation, harvest, and beautiful hues and colors. It can also be wet and chilly, so please remind students to dress for the weather because we get outside every day at STrEaM.

We are excited to announce a transfer bus for Begich-area families! See the flyer and information in this edition of the Rapids Report below. Please contact Begich about the regular bus route from your neighborhood to the school. Let them know you will need to take the transfer bus to STrEaM.

School-wide goals:
Positive School Culture: “Everyone who walks through our doors will be treated with dignity and respect.” We have zero tolerance for bullying, and will continue striving for a safe, respectful learning environment.
Planning and Preparation: Much of our early release planning time went into the preparation for the Arctic Valley TREK Friday. We are asking students to meet this goal through regular use of student planners. Please ask them to see their planner!
Communication: You should have received a syllabus from each teacher for each class at this point. All teachers use Google Classroom, which you can access to see homework and assignments. The Rapids Report is now bi-weekly, so you should receive it every two weeks. We are striving for positive, frequent and informative communication. Please let us know how we are doing!

The RAPIDS Report

News from Anchorage STrEaM Academy
August 18th, 2017

Dear STrEaM friends and families,

Monday is the first day of school! Our staff has been together all week working, planning and preparing for your children to arrive. This week each staff member invested time to plan an in-depth and engaging project for the first quarter.

Wayland Baptist (our facility) is hosting an ASD kindergarten teacher inservice on Monday. This means the parking lot will be full and busy! I will be in the parking lot greeting parents and directing traffic. We have an expanded back yard this year, new carpet, cubbies in the hall for storing things, and two additional classrooms upstairs (room 110 and 111).

Our three overarching goal areas for this school year are: Positive School Culture, Planning and Preparation, and Communication. We have goals both school wide and individually in these areas, striving to be the best school we can be. My promise to you is, everyone who walks through our doors will be treated with respect and dignity. We will always be prepared to provide a great educational experience. Communication to you will be frequent, informative and professional. Please give us feedback on how we are living up to these goals!

SCHEDULE:
This year we are on a block schedule, with Wednesday as our Early Release day.
Monday and Thursday are “A” days. Students have four classes, two before lunch and two after. For the most part, “A” day classes are core classes like Language Arts and Math.
Tuesday and Friday are “B” days. Students have four classes. The morning classes are some core classes as well as STEM classes and PE. The two periods after lunch, school-wide, are Project Electives and Advisory. Students will choose their elective Monday:

Art Exploratory- Ms. Twiford. (art, dance, theatre)
Student Government- Mrs. Bozarth
Outdoor Survival- Mr. Perkins
Family & Consumer Science Exploratory - Ms. Draeger

The last period on “B” day is advisory. Students will meet with advisors for 30 minutes, then advisors will guide them to the appropriate support or enrichment needed. Or, students who are deep into a complex project will meet to collaborate and spend that hour working on the project.
