Rapids Report 3-25-24

 The Rapids Report

March 25th, 2024

Dear STrEaM Families,

It's 4th quarter and it's time for spring testing! Starting next week, Stream students are scheduled to complete the AK STAR Math and ELA assessments, and our 8th grade students will also be completing the Alaska Science Assessment. (see schedule below)

How to best prepare your students for state testing:

  • eat a healthy breakfast

  • get good sleep the night before testing

  • arrive at school on time and ready to test (students will begin first thing in the morning)

  • bring a book or other reading material to use after finishing the test

Testing Schedule

Tuesday March 26th - Math, make-up testing April 5th

Thursday March 28th - ELA, make-up testing April 8th

Tuesday April 2nd - Science (8th Grade only), make-up testing April 3rd

Congrats Nico!

Featured by ASD this week:
Shout out to Anchorage STREAM Academy student Nico Graziano who pulled off a pretty rare feat for Mat-Su 2024 Arctic Winter Games athletes as he has participated in the games more than once in Nordic skiing.
Nico qualified as a young athlete last year in the make-up year and then qualified again this year.
Last year he came home with a gold ulu in the relay race and this year he again helped his team win a gold in the relay.
He also earned a solo gold in the sprint race.
Awesome job to Nico and all of our ASD athletes who participated in the games!

Communicating with teens: Tip of the week!

Whenever possible, focus on the positive:

Sometimes questions can feel like accusations:

  1. Did you do your homework?

  2. Who are you texting?

Make sure to balance with positives:

  1. You are so much fun.

  2. You are getting so good at that!

It is easy to get bogged down in the instructiveness of parenting. Whenever possible, take a step back and focus on what’s fun about your child. What do you admire? How are they brave, curious, or kind? Language is important. Sometimes even innocent questions sound like interrogations to a teen - “what are you thinking?” Instead try, “you seem (happy, upset, et).”

Health Updates

Alaska Behavioral Health is offering free parenting classes next month and will host a free health clinic (dental/vision/medical) at Begich Middle School on April 20-21st. Please see the attached fliers for more information.

Rapids Report 3-4-24

 The Rapids Report

March 4th, 2024

Dear STrEaM Families,

We’ve reached the last week of Quarter 4. At STrEaM we follow a mastery grading philosophy. There are two types of grades: practice assessment and mastery assessments. Mastery assessments are generally end of lesson, unit or project summative assessments, such as tests, quizzes, final papers, presentations, final projects or products. Since these represent the summation of student learning, they are the focus of our grading and make up 80% of a student’s grade. If your child is using this week to finalize, make up or retake assessments, the emphasis is on these mastery assessments.

Congrats to our skiers, coaches and volunteers on a great ski season! We had about 25% of our student population participate in skiing this year, which is incredible. Coaches Mozen, Perkins and Wesley did an amazing job coordinating practices and transportation, coaching up our skiers and communicating with parents and volunteers. We're proud of our ski program and thrilled about completing another great season.

This Week at STrEaM:

Monday 3/4:  Full Day P. 1-7

Tuesday 3/5:  Block Day A Advisory & P. 1-4

Wednesday 3/6: Early Release 12:00

  • Math Club & Boxing after school

  • Pop-Up Bake Sale Fundraiser @ noon

  • 8th Grade Showcase 10:00 to 12:00

Thursday 3/7: Block Day B Advisory & P. 5-8

Friday 3/8:

  • NO SCHOOL. ENJOY SPRING BREAK!
