Rapids Report for 10-9-23

 The Rapids Report

October 10th, 2023

Dear STrEaM Families,

No school this Monday 10/9 for Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Anchorage STrEaM Academy proudly recognizes and honors Indigenous Peoples’ Day. We acknowledge the deep roots of Indigenous communities on the lands we inhabit and are committed to honoring their culture, traditions, and heritage. Together, we will continue to learn, grow, and foster an environment of inclusivity and respect.

We are on the final push towards the end of First Quarter. The quarter ends next Friday, 10/20 (no school that day for Grading and Planning). Quarter 2 begins on Monday 10/23, which is Student-Led Conference week.

Cross Country running season has crossed the finish line! We had a great showing at the championships. HUGE THANK YOU to our coaches Perkins, Wesley and Bahner, as well as the numerous parent volunteers who helped make this a great season!

There is also No School Friday 10/20 and Friday 10/27.

The end of the quarter is 10/20, and Student-Led Conferences will be held 10/25 and 10/26. October is busy and will fly by!

This Week at STrEaM:

Monday 10/9:

  • NO SCHOOL TODAY

Tuesday 10/10: Block day “A” Advisory & P. 1-4

  • X-C Running team celebration!

Wednesday 10/11: Project Day, Early Release 12:00

  • STrEaM APC Meeting 5:30 PM at WBU Rm 107

Thursday 10/12: Block day B, Advisory and P. 5-8

Friday 10/13: Full schedule Periods 1-7

  • End-of-quarter Mastery deadline

Walking home and Muldoon McDonald’s

It has been common practice for some students to walk to McDonald’s on Muldoon after school. We want to share some expectations and parameters:

  • Students walking/biking home are expected to leave campus when school is dismissed. 2-3 staff members supervise 180 students and monitor all traffic during drop-off and pick-up. We do not need extra students to supervise after school. Please clarify plans with your child before school is out and instruct them to leave campus in a timely manner

  • Students may NOT return to campus after dismissal unless there is an emergency and they need help. Specifically, students may not go over to McDonald’s, then return to campus

  • Students must have parent permission to walk after school. Talk with your child about what is allowable after school and keep clear communication

  • We expect appropriate behavior of our students and stay in contact with the management of McDonald’s. Parents will be asked not to allow their children to go to McDonald’s after school if inappropriate behavior is reported. McDonald’s ultimately reserves the right to not allow our students to hang out there, so it is important that we maintain a positive relationship

  • Remind your child to cross safely at the crosswalk and observe all traffic laws. Jaywalking on Muldoon is illegal and very dangerous

  • Call if you have any questions!

End-Of-Quarter Deadline Friday

Friday, October 13 is the end-of-quarter deadline for all practice assignments (PAs) and first attempts of all mastery assignments (MAs).  Students may continue to learn from the redo process by retaking MAs next week.  This week, students will be given reminders and help during Advisory classes to use Student/Parent Connect (Q) and Canvas to make a list of missing items and work to redo. Then, they will be given time in Advisory to finish something from the list.  Please ask your student about their progress with completing any make-up work during Advisory, and please help them finish anything else as homework.

APC (Academic Policy Committee)

The Academic Policy Committee (APC) meets THIS Wednesday! The APC is the governing board of STrEaM Academy. We have several seats opening in October. Please contact Mrs. Biondich or Mr. Mokelke if interested in being on the ballot. Candidates must attend the APC meeting on October 11th to express interest and confirm placement on the ballot. The APC meets the second Wednesday of every month at 5:30 PM.

Sasquatch Update!

Friday, the legend of the Muldoon Sasquatch took another intriguing turn as Mrs. McAllister's class had a brief but electrifying sighting of the elusive creature. The students were left in awe, their faces a mixture of astonishment and excitement.

Meanwhile, Principal Mokelke has been officially deputized by the Forest Service's Department of Sasquatch as an investigator. His determination to unravel the mystery has elevated him to a position of cryptozoological authority, and he approaches the task with both a scientist's curiosity and a detective's precision. Armed with the knowledge of the terrain and a keen understanding of local wildlife, he will delve deeper into the enigma surrounding the Muldoon Sasquatch. These investigations will be meticulous, leaving no stone unturned as we seek to decipher the truth behind this elusive being.

As the days pass, the legend gains even more traction within the halls of Anchorage STrEaM Academy. Students eagerly await updates, hoping for new insights into the mysterious creature that has captured their collective imagination. The atmosphere is charged with a sense of adventure and intrigue, as Muldoon Park transforms into a place of both wonder and mystery.
