Rapids Report for 11-14-22

 The Rapids Report

November 14, 2022

Dear STrEaM Families,

Winter is upon us! This is our last full week before Thanksgiving break, and then we will quickly be heading into December. This Friday is our mid-point for Quarter 2 already. See below for more information on what this means.

Weekly Schedule

11/14 Monday: Full day, p. 1-7

11/15 Tuesday: Block day A, Advisory & P. 1-4

11/16 Wednesday: PROJECT DAY! Early Release 12:00 PM

  • 8th Grade Wildland FIRE Presentations in Auditorium 9:15 AM - Noon.  (check with Ms. Goodman for student time slots)

11/17 Thursday: Block day B, Advisory & P. 5-8

11/18 Friday: Full day, p.1-7  (Mid-Quarter)

Alaska Native & Native American Heritage Month

Friday is also “Rock your Mocs” day, celebrating Alaska Native & American Indian Heritage month. We invite you to join us in celebrating Indigenous culture by wearing your traditional apparel or a teal ribbon on Friday. More ways to support and celebrate Indigenous people:

  • Learn what Native lands you live and work on, and traditional place names

  • Enjoy Indigenous art, music and support the artists

  • Read books and poetry by Native authors (ask- we have suggestions!)

  • Learn about challenges and injustices Native people face & support related causes

  • Study an indigenous language, or learn some common words and phrases

  • Read about the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act

  • Pick up a copy of “Fighter in Velvet Gloves” by Annie Boochever and Roy Peratrovich Jr.

Social-Emotional Learning

The topic this week is “Respect.” 6th Grade will focus on how to show respect through appreciation, 7th grade will learn how to build up respect, and 8th grade will focus on learning the difference between intent vs. impact.

STOPit goes live on November 14th! Students and parents will be able to access the resources on the STOPit app for anonymous reporting. LINK: STOPit Parent Letter

Mid-Quarter Deadline Friday Nov. 18

Nov. 18 marks the halfway point of Quarter 2. Students should be caught-up with missing work, as many teachers have a mid-quarter PA (practice assignment) deadline of Friday, Nov. 18.  Here are some questions to ask your student to support them…

  • Planner: What did you accomplish today?  What did you write in your planner?  What do you need to do as homework?  When is it due?

  • Homework: What do you need to finish as homework today? What did you write in your planner?  What work did you miss from being absent?

  • Binder: What is on your “in” side of your folder that you need to do or show me?  Are you bringing your binder to school and using it?  Planner?  Pencils?

  • Check grades daily on Q: When was the last time you checked your grades on Q?  What work is missing or needs a redo?

  • Check assignments on Canvas: Did you click on each assignment to see if you submitted it?  Did your teacher leave you feedback?  What work is missing or needs a redo?

  • Absences: Did you use Q and Canvas to find out what you missed?  Did you write it in your planner?  Do you need help with remembering to do it?

Barnes & Noble Fundraiser December 4th

We have a wonderful opportunity to earn some money for STrEaM by partnering with Barnes and Noble on December 4th! STrEaM volunteers will bring cheer to the store in the form of a craft table, free gift wrapping, face painting (?), and well, send me a suggestion! When customers check out and mention our school, we receive a percentage of the profit.

I will put a sign-up genius link in next week’s Rapids Report. In the meantime, send me an email if you have any ideas about how we can spread some holiday cheer and promote our fabulous school! My email is hayden_rebekah@asdk12.org Thanks, everybody!

Lunch at STrEaM

Please be sure your child packs a lunch. We do not have a lunch program or lunchroom. Lunch is generally outdoors unless the weather is prohibitive. We keep emergency lunches on hand, and ask for support with providing these: Nov / Dec Lunch Donations

STOPit parent letter

STOPit Reporting Letter

Dear  STrEaM Parents and Guardians,

We are pleased to announce that the Anchorage School District (ASD) has implemented STOPit.

STOPit is an anonymous reporting tool designed to deter and mitigate bullying, cyber abuse, and other inappropriate behaviors, consisting of an app and a back-end incident management system for school administrators.

Specifically, the program empowers students and families to:

  • Report at-risk or inappropriate behaviors anonymously

  • Submit photo or video evidence

  • Alert designated administrators to issues and risks early, before they escalate

No personal information is needed to use STOPit. The only way personally identifiable information will be accessible through STOPit is if a requester voluntarily includes it within the content of a request or message.

Both ASD and STOPit are committed to protecting the privacy of student data. STOPit is a signatory to the Student Privacy Pledge, spearheaded by the Future of Privacy Forum and the Software & Information Industry Association. You may review STOPit’s Privacy Policy for details, including more information on how anonymous reporting works.

Students and families have the power to help put an end to harmful and inappropriate behavior they see online through social media and other means. They can use STOPit to reach out for help if they or a peer are facing a personal crisis or experiencing bullying, abuse, or are otherwise in need of assistance. Our goal with STOPit is to create safer, kinder, school communities both online and off.

Please note that we will be launching STOPit in Advisory, PE and Health classes during the weeks of Oct. 31 - Nov. 11. At that time, your child will be invited to download the STOPit app from the app store on his or her smartphone or tablet at no charge. In addition to the app, STOPit is available via web on any computer or by phone at 907-416-5005.

We encourage you to download the STOPit app and search for your student’s school using the directory.  You can privately ask for help for your student, family, others you care about, or even acquaintances who appear to need help. For more information on STOPit, go to: www.asdk12.com/stopit

Together, we can make sure everyone in our community gets what they need to thrive.

Thank you!

Adam Mokelke
Principal

 The Rapids Report

November 7, 2022

Dear STrEaM Families,

November is Alaska Native & Native American Heritage month.

Join us in celebrating the culture, knowledge, language and traditions of the original Indigenous peoples of Alaska, as well as all of the United States.

Tuesday 11/8 is an asynchronous learning day: there is no school in-person. Teachers have sent out notification on assignments for students to complete on Tuesday. Friday there is no school for Veterans Day: teachers across the district will be in professional development.

STOPit program

ASD is rolling out a new reporting system called STOPit.

Future Facilities Discussion

As part of ASD’s proposal to consolidate and repurpose facilities to meet the impending budget shortfall, STrEaM is in consideration to move to Wonder Park Elementary and share this space with Alaska Native Cultural Charter School (ANCCS). Important points regarding this:

  • This is only a preliminary proposal

  • The plan must be approved by the ASD school board

  • Any change for our school must be approved by our APC board

  • We will follow what is in our charter, including remaining in the East Anchorage area and having adequate access to green space for outdoor education

  • If approved, the change wouldn't take effect until next fall at the earliest

  • There will be ample opportunity for discussion and input

If you have thoughts or questions about the potential change, I encourage you to attend the APC meeting Wednesday at STrEaM, and/or reach out to me by email or phone.

Weekly Schedule
