Dear STrEaM Families,

This month we take the School Climate and Connectedness Survey. This provides valuable data from students, staff and families about our program. Please take the family survey, as your feedback is important to and helps us continually improve our school.

This week is a short week, no school Friday: otherwise, we have a regular schedule all week, NO conferences. Thursday is a regular, full school day.

There is also NO SCHOOL on Monday, 2/21, for Presidents' Day. We're just three weeks from the end of Quarter 3 and Spring Break!

Mrs. Yip, a retired teacher and member of our APC, is once again hosting an Art Club on Wednesdays after early release, starting THIS WEEK!

22-23 Lottery: Explorers Wanted!

The 22-23 Lottery is open! Please share our posts and spread the word about our program with your family and friends. See Mrs. Biondich for flyers and posters if you have a place to distribute them.  Returning students do NOT have to apply in the lottery. Social-Emotional Learning Topic of the Week

The students will be taking the School Climate and Connectedness Survey this week during advisory. 

Academic Policy Committee

APC meets next on March 16th at 5:30 PM on Zoom and Youtube. Contact us to be on the agenda for public comment. The Facilities Committee will present the criteria for a future STrEaM facility for APC approval.

STrEaM Anchorage 501(c)3 

Two easy ways to support our Nonprofit:

1. Support the Silent Auction. The Second STrEaM Annual Silent Auction will be held again in May. SA501c3 will spoon provide information about this fundraising event.

Conferences

Like all ASD secondary schools, STrEaM is NOT holding spring Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you would like to talk with teachers you can always schedule a meeting. We will maximize learning time and not do extra early dismissal days. There is no school on Friday 2/18 and Monday 2/21. We are already halfway through the 3rd Quarter!

Dear STrEaM Families,

During the month of February, please join us in celebrating Black History Month. This is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Black Americans, honor legacies and achievements, and continue striving for equity and equality for all. 

STEM at STrEaM:

This Saturday our Robotics team participated in the First Lego League State competition! We’re proud of our students and the team which represented us at this level for the first time. Teams from all over Alaska competed in three main categories: the robotic game, innovation project and core values. Mrs. Sonday reports that our team worked tirelessly perfecting code, developing an engineering plan, and collaborating with each other towards the objectives. Way to go Rapids!

Social-Emotional Learning Topic of the Week

The Social-Emotional Learning topic this week is accountability. Taking responsibility for our words, actions, and impact on others is powerful, and can be restorative and cathartic. When we ask students to reflect and restore after an incident, there is an emphasis on taking accountability for their actions, regardless of the reasons or actions of others. Accountability is a step in learning to self-regulate and build positive relationships.

January 31st, 2022

Dear STrEaM Families,

This week we turn the calendar to February. We’re almost halfway through the 3rd quarter, which ends for students on Thursday, March 3rd. Students begin Spring Break Friday, March 4th, returning to start Q4 on Monday, March 14th. 

This coming Saturday our Robotics team will participate in the State competition! We’re proud of them and can’t wait to share their successes with all of you.  Go Rapids!

The 22-23 Lottery opens Tuesday. Please share our posts and spread the word about our program with your family and friends. Returning students do not need to re-apply. 

The Social-Emotional Learning topic this week is “taking responsibility.” We can all encourage students to take responsibility for their own actions, regardless of blame or the actions of others. We own what we do, how we react and respond, how we treat one another and the choices we make.

Ski Team info

On Monday 1/31 we will be practicing our classic style skiing at STrEaM. Tuesday, also at STrEaM, will be our day to work on waxing skis and getting ready to race. Our first ski race is Wednesday 2/2 at 5:30 PM at Bartlett High School.  Skiers will catch the bus at 4:00 PM Wednesday at STrEaM to go to that race. Estimated bus return time 7:30 PM.   2022 Race Schedule:  We are so fortunate that the snow came back after that warm spell. We had 37 skiers again on the trails Friday 1/2). That is amazing! Thanks to all our parent volunteer drivers, and coaches!

This coming Thursday 2/3 we will be gearing up for skate skiing at STrEaM.  On Friday 2/4 we will practice at Russian Jack. (Our first day to skate ski on groomed trails this season!!!)

Be patient with staff and other drivers, follow directions and traffic laws in the parking lot and neighborhood. 

Watch for students walking or on wheels, skis, etc.

Rapids Report 1-24-22

 The Rapids Report

January 24th, 2022

Dear STrEaM Families,

This week we will have a modified schedule: “B” block day on Monday and “A” block day Friday. We won’t have the “full” schedule periods 1-7 on Monday and Friday. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday schedules remain the same. This is a proactive COVID mitigation strategy: fewer classes per day means less exposure, less intermingled groups, fewer passing times, less movement in the school. It also makes it easier to cover classes if we have multiple staff absences. Since this gives us two days of “specials,” Period 8 on Thursday will be Advisory-based Learning Labs, focused on math and academic work. 

Regular “specials” Period 8 on Monday this week (Musicians, bring instruments Monday!)

PE will be skating at Scenic Park this week! Please have students bring skates if they have them!

Ski Team info

Practice at STrEaM Monday 1/24 and Tuesday 1/25. Our first ski race is this Wednesday1/26 at 5:30 PM at Eagle River High School.  Skiers will catch the bus at 4:00 PM Wednesday at STrEaM to go to that race. Estimated return time 7:30.  2022 Season race schedule click HERE

We’ve been to Russian Jack 3 times already with an average of 33 skiers. That is amazing! Thanks to all our parent volunteers and coaches! Thursday 1/27 and Friday 1/28 we plan to practice at Russian Jack.
